If I run sax2 -r -m 0=radeon the screen turns black.

Try searching for threats before you post next time. There’s about a gazillion of threats of this kind. The driver that opensuse.org/ati supplies does not work very well with some ATI Radeon Graphic Cards. When you kill sax, screen turns black. Nothing can really help you, except hacking SaX2, to rewrite a new config similar to the initial one.
Of course I searched for such threats before posting and tried a lot of solutions, among others an original xorg.conf, but with no success. I had to mention, that it worked before I compiled an own kernel. Now I reinstalled the original kernel, but the problem persists.
As I remember, 0=radeon means that you’ll use open driver. Never worked properly for me. Best results I got with proprietary driver directly from ATI site, and then you put 0=fglrx
