Saving a session has not worked for me for a while.
Am wondering if someone else has this too?

I guess this is about a GUI session. You mind telling us which desktop environment you use?
And then what you do to save the session?
Sorry you are absolutely right, I use KDE.
Have 4 desktops, and always want it to boot on desktop 2.
Have several programs run then, however, recently the session starts on desktop 1, which I also try, it does not want as I always had before.
Never had problems with it, and why it is no longer, really no idea.
