Just installed opensuse 11.1 no problems, absolutely the best looking os yet and everything works (or appears to) but no sound - can anyone help: I am a beginner at Linux
you have to install Linux Sound HOWTO.
Thanks

Many thanks - do you know how to get Kaffiene to play DVDs??
Do you have basic sound functioning yet?
Yes, I do, Amarok works fine - when I ask Kaffiene to play a DVD it tells me that due to legal requirements etc it cannot play DVDs - where do I go from here?
1st, set up your repositories for your Software package manager with OSS, Non-OSS, Update and Packman and videolan. There is guidance here: Repositories/11.1 - openSUSE-Community
Then go to YaST > Software > Software Management and select “filter” and search for libdvdcss. Install libdvdcss (or libdvdcss2, I’m not sure what it is called) and then once that is installed, REMOVE repository videolan. That is important. REMOVE the videolan repository !!
After videolan repository is removed, and ONLY after it is removed, then with only OSS, Non-OSS, Update and Packman, install the packman packaged version of kaffeine, libxine1, xine-ui, libdvdnav4, libdvdread4.
See if that helps.
Apologies for not replying - audio works fine - still can’t get Kaffeine to play dvds:
