I don’t own such a device, I found a thread hinting at a possible solution:

[Solved] Cannot mount Android device via USB in Linux - Android Forums](http://androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-s/115574-solved-cannot-mount-android-device-via-usb-in-linux.html)

The OP there mentions that the Samsung device needed to be put into ‘Mass storage’ mode first.

Seconds before I was about to post the question here, I randomly discovered something by accident. I have an application installed on the phone called “Quick System Info”, and whilst trawling through its various menus, I found an entry here: Basic Info -> More Information -> USB Settings, which gives the following five options:

  • Samsung Kies
  • Media player
  • Mass storage
  • PC Internet
  • Ask on connection

This was currently set to “Samsung Kies”.

Maybe your smart phone has a similar menu setting.

BTW, please wrap commands and output with

[/CO..] tags for future posts. It generally makes for easier reading and preserves formatting. :)
