Wifi and netbooks,
having bought an samsung NC10 for the wife for Christmas I thought great
Peace and quite. However getting the wifi to work was something else.
I tried all the useul things but in the end downloaded every live CD I could.
Only one worked out of the Box so to speak.
I too tried OpenSUSE 11.1 after reading here good comments about it.
What i noticed is:
windows appear out of the screen with Compiz enabled, and they have to be moved manually
browsing through wifi works, even if it is very slow. In the forum linked above it is suggested to upgrade the NC10 bios to solve this issue, but I have not yet tried myself (I bought my NC10 last Monday, and installed Suse yesterday evening).
Yast does not connect to the repositories through wifi. I do hope it is due to problem #2 and upgrading the bios solve this.
Apart from this, everything works out of the box.
I’ll let you know.
So, I verified I had again problems in surfing the web, then booted XP, updated the bios, and rebooted Suse. I cannot obviously be sure it was the bios upgrade, but now I am suring happily, and Yast works correctly.
hi there. i installed suse 11.1 on my nc10 and this is what i got working out of the box:
working:
sound ( but the volume is not spread uniformly on the volume bar. at min there is no sound, a bit upper the volume is at half and a bit upper is at max. so at 30% i had 100% volume. FN + up/down was not working);
FN + feft/right the displayed become brighter/darker, but no visual notification on the screen.
touch pad,
display,
lan
webcome-tried with “cheese” program and after a while i saw the image (it took a while, i was about to close the application)
not working:
wifi-i could find my network, but could not connect. installed madwifi driver, but still no success;
none of the FN + F2/F3…/F12 works.
i have the lastest bios. didnot try compiz.
hope this info helps someone to decide to instal suse 11.1 on nc10 or not. suse 11.1 works great on my desk pc, and i love it
NETBOOKS REQUIRE BIOS UPDATES - CHECK THESE OUT 1ST TO MINIMISE THRASHING AROUND - BUT NEEDS EXPERIENCE/CARE:-
NC10 - Thanks to rushman on openSUSE - after searching the web - I updated the NC10’s BIOS to 04CA and installed openSUSE 11.1. Everything works fine.
I changed screen brightness F2 on booting from Auto to User Change.
One user had tried 6 flavours of Linux and only OpenSUSE 11.1 was flawless.
(For Asus 701 - eeePC needs bios update from 401 to 0910 or late for some USB storage devices).
BIG SUSE FAN SINCE VERS 7.0
I OWN A SAMSUNG NC10 SINCE THREE MONTHS WITH UPGRADED BIOS TO C4CA
INSTALLED SUSE LINUX VERS 11.1 AND RUNNING KDE 3.5 TO PLANE SATISFACTION, BUT WITH THIS SETUP MOST OF THE FN+FUNCTIONS KEYS DO NOT WORK NEITHER DO THE FN+UP, DOWN, LEFT AND RIGHT WORK.
THEY DO WORK WITHIN THE GNOME DESKTOP BUT I DO PERSONALLY PREFER THE KDE 3.5 DESKTOP FOR PERSONAL REASONS (DO NOT LIKE THE KDE 4.2 EITHER…IT LOOKS MUCH LIKE VISTA).
DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS THAT WOULD HELP ME TO ENJOY THE FULL USE OF THE FN KEYS, PLEASE ??? :\
