I am trying to get a Samsung ML-2010R installed on my network (via a Edimax PS1206U printer server) with not much success. 2 Linux configurations should be able to access the printer. One running opensuse 11.1 and the other 10.3, both 32bit.
The printer server is accessible and configurable via the network.
I have tried several driver alternatives (e.g. splix LSB 3.1 and 3.2, respectively, foomatic)
In summary, I would say that the result works very inconsistently (i.e sometimes I can get a, test page out). I do not know where to look.

Stay tuned: I will now try to connect a HP Laserjet 4L to the two configurations (OpenSuse 11.1 and 10.3) via network server IC105-FASTPOCKET-TX (from SEH).

That seems to be the recommended driver. If you are using YaST try adding the
printer directly with CUPS at: http://localhost:631/
Did you use name or IP in the socket option? Try a URI of
socket://<IP of printer>
If the printer’s IP is set by dhcp, try a fixed IP or configure dhcp to always
give the same IP to the printer’s MAC address.

I found that when I added my samsung scx4200 printer connected to an hp jetdirect, I had to set it to raw printing. Try setting the printserver to raw as well as the cups print setup to use raw directcly to the ipaddress with the samsung ppd file.
It is all set up just as you say: fixed ip address in the right subnet, socket printing. The result is mixed: sometimes it prints, sometimes after a long time (ca. 5 minutes), sometimes the message appears “recoverable: Network host ‘192.168.178.3’ is busy; will retry in 30 seconds…” and I can wait for ever…
Are you sure this address in in your network range - 192.168.178.3?
Try setting the printserver to lpr printing.
Tet the ipaddress of the printer is alive (ping say)
Now set up the printer in cups (localhost:631) and choose the connection LPD/LPR printer.
Set the connection: lpd://192.168.178.3.
Choose the corresponding samsung driver for the printer.
Yes, the Samsung ML-2010R works via the edimax printer server with the socket connection from both OpenSuse configurations (11.1 and 10.3).
What does not yet work is the HP LaserJet 4L via its SEH printer server using the foomatic/ljet4 driver and socket connection. For that problem I do not know where to look as the most consistent response is “recoverable: Network host ‘192.168.178.3’ is busy; will retry in n seconds…”…and I can wait for ever.

PS: Sorry about the title of the post…the problem has shifted away from Samsung to HPLaserJet 4L/SEH printer server…but it is the same type of problem!!
The problems I had are solved, so many thanks for the responses I received! They certainly helped to confirm the direction I was pursuing.
The Samsung problem was easily solved as suggested by P.V.
I discovered that the reason I was waiting for about 22 minutes for the HP LJ 4L to respond was the setting of the SEH printer server. I deselected Multicast and added the gateway address, and also deselected BOOTP, RARP, ZeroConF and ARP/PING and the printer responds immediately.
