Samsung 840 SSD

My Samsung SSD has recent firmware updates for Windows and Mac. Obviously I run Linux, so…?!? :sarcastic:

SO what?

Is the SSD working or not?

I like your logic!
Yes working pretty swiftly by all accounts.

Is it a good idea to upgrade firmware when released? If so, I’m guessing go with the Window’s firmware?

I ask myself the same question everytime a PC that I own has a firmware update available.

What I do is go to the manufacturer site and try to find a ‘readme’ or other documentation describing what the firmware update/change may be. Only with that information am I typically happy to make (or not make) an update. Sometimes the manufacturers will have a support forum, so if one can not find the information with the update (describing the change before applying) then I will go to their help forum and ask there for information on the update BEFORE make a decision as to whether I should update.

Good shout, I’ll try manufacturer’s forum.

I keep a Windows / DOS boot disc around for this sort of thing (BIOS Updates, firmware updates, etc). You will probably have to do the same. The ONLY manufacturer I’ve seen release updates with Linux as an option is Dell (others might, but I mostly use Dell hardware), and even then it’s only on certain models.

Hi
One of the reasons I selected OCZ for my SSD was they produce a bootable
iso, it will download and install the firmware update etc.

I agree with this approach. One should inform oneself about the features of a produc tbefore one byes it. And when a manufacturere answers to your question of “Hi, I am thinking about bying your product x and I know it gets firmware updates sometines, how do I manage that with Linux” with something like “What is Linux?”, then you answers hould be “Thank you, I go for another brand”.

I have a gadget which gets firmware upgrades in two flavours, Windows
and Mac. The Windows one is just an executable that expands a firmware
binary into a usb stick you plug in, into a certain directory, running
fashionable and cute wizard.

The Mac version is directly the binary firmware with instructions on how
to create the directory on the usb stick and copy the file there! X-)

They could just as well say “Windows, Mac, and Linux” because the Mac
instructions are the same as for Linux.

As an FYI, Mushkin also has direct Linux support – within the zipped firmware upgrade package, you find a native Linux firmware installer (both 32bit and 64 bit versions) for their SSD product.

It is worth to have some Windows installed, if possible and if external Windows or DOS boot does not work.

It will be needed for a variety of firmware updates, not only from Samsung.

Hi
Again, this HP can do it’s BIOS updates via UEFI and a BIOSupdate
directory on the ESP partition. But again FreeDOS, bootable USB etc
should take care of most things…
