Samba problem - no workgroup available

I read the post on bugs.kde.org. Both instances of the OPENSUSE and opensuse is in dolphin places -> network -> shared folders (smb). They point to the same subfolders. Is it possible to tweak this or do I have to wait for them to make a official change in the package?

Another question, my printer pops up in the same window as a server named the ip adress. Is it possible to give it a name, or to identify itself in another way? https://paste.opensuse.org/42038217

Yes, got that.

I guess raise an openSUSE bug report for the KDE package maintainers.

So the third entry (folder with IP Address) pertains to a samba printer connected to one of your hosts?

Another thought about your printer. Apparently some network printers (eg HP) utilise WS-Discovery (amongst other discovery protocols) to advertise themselves, but that should be able to be disabled within the printer if desired.

No it is a standalone network printer. I wondered if I could use the /etc/hosts - file to attach a name to this ip adress?

Dag R

It is being advertised by the printer itself, so I would speculate that the changes (eg hostname) need to be made there.

One of my windows machines appear in dolphin only with the ip v 6 adress. When I try to doble click the icon I get a error message:

  Internal Error
Please send a full bug report at https://bugs.kde.org

The norwegian part tells me “libsmbclient reported an error, but did not indicate what the problem is. This can mean/is about a serious problem is in your network, or a problem with libsmbclient”. Shall I make a new tread for this, or shall I report it as a bug?

Dag R

An online translator also advised about using tcpdump to gain more information about this…

libsmbclient reported an error but did not explain what the problem is. This can mean a serious problem in your network - but can also mean a problem with libsmbclient. If you want to help us, please get a tcpdump of the network interface while trying to browse the web (note that this may contain private data, so do not provide this on an open medium if you are unsure - you can send it privately to the developers if they ask for it)

Based on your description about a Windows host using IPv6 only, I would look at comparing it’s IP/firewall settings with your other Windows hosts perhaps. Is IPv6 turned off on your openSUSE machine? Can you ping the Windows host (eg via Avahi hostname) from there?

From an Avahi point of view, what hosts/services are reported discovered using ‘avahi-browse’?

avahi-browse -art
  • You may need to install ‘avahi-utils’ package first.

Yes, this may need a bug report to resolve. (I can’t replicate it in my home or work LAN environments, but I have no IPv6-only Windows hosts.)

Thanks for help on this issue. I get the windows hosts up, even if the printer only have the ip adress as name, the suse server twice, and one of my windows machines as ip v6 adress. I think I have to follow up on this as separate issues. The fun with linux and OpenSUSE is the possibility to look into this issues and get everything to run smooth. A great feeling when things fall in place!
