Samba Printer Prints Empty Pages

I have spent the last few evenings trying to configure a keyboard-less old laptop as a server, and have also decided to use it as a samba server sharing a USB-attached printer.

I had to install Ubuntu Server on that one for reasons I will not discuss here, but my main workstation is running OpenSuse 11.1. I am able to connect to the server machine via ssh, and have also installed webmin to help with administration.

The problem I have is that the pages I print appear completely blank out of the printer. It is a HP Deskjet 3420, which seems to be properly set up on the server machine, as it prints the CUPS test page alright. I was also able to add that printer to my workstation, and it appears and configures correctly. When I send a test page, or any page whatsoever, from my OpenSuse 11.1 workstation, the page goes out completely empty, as if the ink is white. The printer prints fine when attached to a windows machine, but when it was attached to my workstation, I experienced the same problem with empty pages. So the printer is ok, and I can’t figure why I can’t print from OpenSuse…

I use KDE 4.2, if that matters. I’d grealy appreciate any suggestions as to where I should be looking into. Possibly there is a tiny little detail I am missing, but it is beyond me for now.

Thanks in advance!

The printer prints fine when attached to a
windows machine, but when it was attached to my workstation, I
experienced the same problem with empty pages.

It appears the problem is more one of the drivers than the network.

Have you checked the instructions on HP’s web site for installing on Linux?

Search the Hardware forum and you will see a number of posts related to
installing HP printers, albeit locally.

Thanks for your suggestions. Indeed, a driver issue was my first hunch, but what made me hesitate was the fact that I could print a test page via the CUPS interface, but not from an application. So I thought drivers must be ok. I will read through the resources you pointed out though, perhaps there is a driver issue on one of the computers, not on both.

Have you used YAST to installed hplip and then run hp-setup?

Actually, I think I solved everything. I did not use the hp-setup tool, but through YAST I was able to configure the remote printer on my laptop, and via the CUPS interface I had configured it on the remote machine. So now everything works beautifully, and pages print as expected. I am not sure what exactly I did, I guess it was something about the CUPS server on the remote machine, and telling YAST on the local one to listen for CUPS remotely…

The only remaining issue is to be able to set up printing from Windoze… I am stuck at the driver installation stage.

You need to use the drivers on the CD from HP. From the print wizard use a
network printer, when it asks for a driver choose “have disk”. Windows
should fetch the drivers from the CD and finish the install. When the CD is
loaded it may auto run, just close that out. You may have to browse around
on the CD to find where they are stored.
