Samba PDC and Roaming Profiles? Any Advices

Hi there,

I’m going to set up a samba server (PDC w/ openldap) for a small Company (10 Users atm) tomorrow. Although I’ve done this several times I never used Roaming profiles, since I have some very bad memories about Roaming Profiles and NT4 >:)
The full monty between 20 Minutes Login waiting periods and data loss…

However, Roaming Profiles are quite attractive regarding the backup issues and there are some trainies in that company who will change their Desks over time…

Now, my question is: What’s your experience with Roaming Profiles? How do they behave with Profiles around 5 GB and at least one big file (one word: outlook.pst)?

Thanks in advance,

lizzard

lizzard;

Roaming profiles work quite well and the speed depends a bit on your
underlying hardware. Since each profile is loaded from the server at login
and saved on the server at logoff, large profiles can cause delays in
login/logoff. Most lag time occurs with profiles that contain lots of
pictures or, as in your case, with large pst files. The secret is to keep
this junk out of the profile. I would suggest you read the section, “Windows
Client Configuration” in “Samba-3 By Example” located here:
