Russian repo server problem again

a while ago I had already raised the problem,:

Now again I have the problem that update via yast fails because it tries to connect to a russian mirror:

Fehlermeldung: 'Failed to connect to mirror.tspu.ru port 443 after 0 ms: Couldn't connect to server'

the suggestions in the thread mentioned above don’t make sense to me, since in /etc/zypp/repos.d/mozilla.repo there is no russian server specified, but

baseurl=https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/mozilla/openSUSE_Leap_15.6

why is there a connection to a russian server, and how can it be avoided?
how can a proper connectable server be set?

Basic forum search throws a thread from yesterday.

Mirror tspu.ru is located in Tomsk, Siberia. If you’re not in Russia, then it is very strange to use that mirror.

Mirrors are not operated by openSUSE…only the “source” Rsync servers.

Well, someone has to put it on the mirror list.

Everybody can register a mirror as longe as the technical requirements are fullfilled.
You may have a read:
https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Mirror_infrastructure

You may also want to have a look in how many countrys mirrors are registered:
https://mirrors.opensuse.org/

So, someone still has to approve it after the required information has been sent to the admin email address.

And what exactly is your point? There are no reasons to reject a mirror, even when it is located in Russia.

The informations about sanctions against this country are publicly available. As openSUSE does not provide these mirrors, absolutely zero sanctions apply.

Btw, even if openSUSE would provide the server itself in Russia, there is no sanction which would apply.

So there is no sense in bringing up such claims…

I just asked a question, but since this question is now blocked by admins as being off-topic there is no point discussing it any further.

Are you going to block every user from Russia from accessing this forum too? Because they are sanctioned?

You recognize the difference between “my OS relies on some random packages supplied from a random, remote Russian server” and “someone is looking for help, no matter where he comes from”?

These “random packages” from a “random, remote Russian server” are official distribution updates/upgrades from registered and official openSUSE mirrors.

As https://download.opensuse.org/ is only a redirector/load balancer, you get your updates from mirrors all around the world without noticing. Including Russia, China, Korea and more. It’s a kind of magic…(or mirror basics for technical oriented ppl).

I don’t use this “load balancer”. I use dedicated update servers. For good reasons.
