I’m currently running openSUSE 11.3 in Virtualbox 3.2.8 and I’ve got a couple questions.
My host OS is Windows 7. Do I need to fear from a virus getting through to Windows from the Virtual Machine? (I’m more than aware of staying off untrustworthy sites, but this is more an overly-cautious mindset than anything)
Windows 7 requires 2 gigs of RAM minimum. I have 4, so I’m currently giving 2 gigs of RAM to suse. I still notice a performance hit with SUSE though. Is that normal? Also, is it possible to give more than 2gigs to SUSE without crashing Windows? My main reason for even questioning that is because I still have the exact same performance with Windows whether VB is running or not.
Thirdly. Did I get this in the right sub-forum? If not, my apologies.
2GB RAM to SUSE is plenty
I would be more worried about viruses from your running win7 than anything coming over from SUSE, which could only happen if you have say enabled a ‘Shared Folder’ and are moving files between the 2 OS’s.
SUSE’s performance in a Virtual Machine has never been fantastic IMO, least not compared for Eg, to Ubuntu.
Though I was running a test install of 11.3 LXDE over the weekend (but with a Linux host) 1GB RAM assigned and it was pretty good.
Okay, so if I read that right, then I don’t need to worry about say, a windows virus hitting my SUSE virtual machine and worming through to the host unless I’ve got a shared folder?
Also, a bit off topic what could contribue to SUSE not working so well in a vm, if you could offer a theory?
