Running multiple VMs for learning administration

I’m currently going through, what is essentially a Linux+ course. I don’t like any of the exercises in the book, as it’s outdated and doesn’t really thoroughly teach how to implement a lot of stuff.

Is there a program or suite of programs out there where I can create a few VM’s with their own IP’s, users, files systems, etc. so I can setup up Samba, NFS, NIS, etc.?

if you have the memory you can run a lot of VMs…i don’t know how
many in free versions…

free VirtualBox is all i need…and, it is drop dead easy…

thanks palladium, installing virtualbox right now. =)

How about the Live CD, KDE or GNOME. Burn it to a CD or install on thumbdrive, then boot (may need to check BIOS to enable BOOT order).

With some work, there’s QEMU, kvm/libvirt, from oneclick.

i knew you needed vms for the mcitp classes

didn’t know you needed them for linux +, I ought to get that linux + cert

good luck with your vms
Id hate to think of paying too much for a vm

Sun’s VirtualBox is a free download. There is a paid version with a couple of extra bells and whistles.

With virtual box i literally need to install other os’s on real partitions? I downloaded **** small linux to use as the virtual machines so my PC doesn’t get bogged down to quickly…

Virtualbox simulates a disk for the guest OS using a file on the host OS.

D@mn Small Linux gets bleeped out? That’s great. I guess they don’t want to see competitors getting free space here. rotfl!

yeah lol

this thing is amazing… I got a few DSL VM’s up and running. I created a disk for tiny XP as well and am installing it now. I’m getting the impression that this would be the way to go for running Windows apps instead of Wine… is there are a huge performance trade off?

well, i guess it was too good to be true, but I’ll porbably get this to work eventually. I’m trying to get the XP guest machine to install the right drivers for the emulated hardware, but I can’t seem to find anything yet.

DSL machines worked perfectly though…

I run XP in a VM on Linux works great for buisness type apps . Would not recommend it for high power 3D gaming though, 3d accel in th VM’s is still developing.

I’m really just trying to get the network connection running @ this point. I’m lurking @ the virtualbox forums right now.

I always run VBox on Linux don’t know about Windows hosts.

not long ago MS made a big deal out of “working with” open source to
make sure it would run inside a VM hosted by MS…and, soon we had
lots of folks dropping in here trying to learn openSUSE, in VM…

it never occurred to me that MS probably did nothing at all to make
sure their pigs run well in a VM hosted by Linux…so good luck with
that (i can’t help cause i cant even spel winders, much less run it…)

so, seems to me they WANT you to run XP native, and not vice versa…

Reminds me of MS saying they don’t view the open source desktop environment as a “substantial threat” and those Halloween papers (?) or whatever they were called were leaked. lol!

I’ve got one more chapter to read through in this god awful boring text book before I will get back into the Virtual Box…
