"Running Linux" Relevance

I am curious if the O’Reilly book "Running Linux’ 3rd edition (1999) would still be relevant for learning to administer Linux? Thank you for any help!

Ten years is approximately two eternities in computer terms. Considering
Linux’s age has gone from six years old to sixteen in the time you can
decide what you want to do but I’d either go for an updated version or
just something else. Most people, I have found, learn best by doing. If
you run into a roadblock in your day-to-day musings then try the forums or
search w/Google, and if you aren’t being challenged enough perhaps try to
fix others’ problems or find workable solutions. There are more data out
there than you can learn and, especially in the Open Source/Standards
world, most of it is free. Just my opinion…

Good luck.

Bash books…? - openSUSE Forums

This thread may prove of use.

A book like that will set you back 10 years. lol!

No honestly, you will just make life more difficult for yourself using outdated information. Linux has advanced a lot since then. I bet there is information in there on how to tweak XFree86 config files by hand, how to set up PPP over dialup and so forth.

Do yourself a favour and use it as a doorstop, or substitute brick.

The book isn’t a total waste however; while it is certainly outdated in specific content, I am sure the absolute basics of Linux are still correct as these haven’t changed drastically since then.

By absolute basics, I mean basic terminal concepts, the block diagrams that explain how the different parts of the system work, the definitions of things like the shell, kernel, etc, etc. Basically, the first one or two chapters of that book are probably spot-on with the first two chapters of any newer book out there. And I’m also sure that for many of the common programs out there (vim, emacs) that have been around that long, they still have the same basic commands.

Past those basics it would only be of use for historical reference, if you’re into that kind of thing.

Okay, okay…I get the point…lol!

I will continue my research online…thanks for the advice!
