Run XFCE and Gnome 3 OpenSUSE 11.4

Hi all.

I’m asking if it would be possible to run XFCE and Gnome 3 on the same system and if so how can I go about this in the correct manner?

My GNOME 3 repo is set to 98.

The short answer is Yes, you can load more than one desktop into openSUSE. If you have not changed your default login screen, you will notice a selection on the bottom left called sessions. You select sessions and then select XFCE if it is installed and then log into the XFCE desktop. To install XFCE, do the following:

YaST / Software / Software Management / View Button (Top Left) and Select Patterns. In the Patterns on the left under Graphical Environments please check the block for XFCE Desktop Environment. Then select the** Accept** button on the bottom right. Many packages will be installed and when complete, just restart openSUSE. If you installed openSUSE from a LiveCD, I guess I am not sure if that is an option or not, so let me know if it is missing as I always install from the DVD version of openSUSE.

Thanks very much for the quick reply, I know how to install desktops et all in OpenSUSE using both YaST and Zypper, however I should have clarified my worry, I’m under the impression that XFCE relies on GTK2 libraries which would have thusly been updated to GTK3 libraries thanks to the Gnome 3 update, as such I am wondering if Gnome 3 will not conflict or break any dependencies of XFCE.

Any help will be, as always, greatly appreciated :slight_smile:

So I have installed KDE, GNOME and XFCE and can switch between them at will, but I have not loaded GNOME 3 since my main desktop is KDE. I suppose you will just have to try running XFCE and tell us what happens. Some one has to be first, perhaps that is you.

This thread is a bit old but just my 2 cents: I’ve been using Gnome 3 on Suse 11.4 for a while now and I suddenly got the itch to try XFCE again as well so I just went ahead and installed it via the XFCE Pattern in the Yast software manager. It runs but without the borders! Also, quite a few of the settings dialogs are blank such as (surprise) the ones that change the borders, the tweak dialog and several others. Not sure if there is a way around this problem yet but if nothing else Thunar runs very nicely under G3 so thats useful … kind of.

Anyone have similar experiences?
