I have KDE and GNOME installed on Tumbleweed, and depending on my mood I like to switch between them. Is there a way to only have certain applications/processes autostart when logging into their respective desktop? For example, gnome-software and probably other GNOME components start on KDE automatically, and vice-versa. I’d like to eliminate this as much as possible to save system resources.
Also, I know GDM is typically used with GNOME and SDDM with KDE - is it better to switch back and forth, or is there a way to do so automatically? Or does one work better for both desktops?
I use GDM for both. I mainly use KDE, but GDM is fine for login to KDE.
I have not noticed whether Gnome-software is running. Perhaps it is, but it never leaves any notifications.
Thanks! Only reason I noticed was that gnome-software popped up a notification telling me I had updates to install. It’s really not a big deal, I would just prefer not to have duplicate services running when whichever desktop I’m on should be handling those things for that session.
I do configure Gnome to not download updates. Maybe that’s why I’m not seeing that notification.
If you can find the “.desktop” file that starts the application, then you can copy that to “$HOME/.config/autostart” and edit the copy so that it only runs in Gnome.
