Rtw89 wifi driver crashes (seemingly randomly)

I just installed Leap 15.5 a few days ago, now sometimes WiFi simply disappears, I believe the driver crashes. I’m on kernel 5.14.21-150500.55.7 with a RTL8852BE WiFi card. The driver in use is rtw89 from the openSUSE Hardware repository (is there any difference to the one in home:sauerland:hardware?).

A few minutes ago, it happened again and the journal entries were about the same but preceded by the following 3 lines:

Just for reference: a different wifi question on Leap 15.4, but on my same hardware a few months ago:

Driver in hardware and my Home Repo are the same, I build in my Home and branch to hardware.

So post:

zypper se -si rtw89 kernel-default kernel-firmware
uname -a
zypper lr -d

PS
The problem in the old thread is solved.

Driver in hardware and my Home Repo are the same, I build in my Home and branch to hardware.

Ok, that’s good to know.
Here’s the outputs:

zypper se -si rtw89 kernel-default kernel-firmware

Yes, the referred problem is solved, I should have mentioned that.

Delete all kernel Versions 5.14.21-150400.24.69.1, that are kernel from Leap 15.4 and install kernel 5.14.21-150500.53.2.
That can be done bei Yast, searching for kernel-default and going to the Version tab.

Now start with that kernel and see, if it is working there.

Also post:
zypper se -si | grep -Ei 'systemp|system p|system-p'

Is btrtl installed:
zypper se -si btrtl

Please delete if so.

That sounds more like hardware or (less likely) firmware issue. Driver cannot do anything if the device suddenly disappeared.

That sounds more like hardware or (less likely) firmware issue.
Since the crashes started after the update to Leap 15.5, I think software is the main suspect at the moment.
btrtl is not installed.

zypper se -si btrtl

Before uninstalling the Leap 15.4 kernel:

zypper se -si | grep -Ei 'systemp|system p|system-p'

I then uninstalled the Leap 15.4 kernel and installed the kernel 5.14.21-150500.53.2 via Yast as suggested. Now:

zypper se -si kernel-de

Now I boot from the installed kernel:

uname -sir
Linux 5.14.21-150500.53-default x86_64

WiFi works, I will watch for any driver crashes and report soon.

It happened again twice last night, once with each installed kernel. Here’s the kernel version and the corresponding journal entries of the crash:

First, there is no driver crash (at least, not in the logs you posted). Do not use confusing description.

Second, everything after the first line is irrelevant - it is the normal reaction of a driver on a disappearing device. If you believe the problem is not hardware, then you need to investigate what happens before the first line - what is the reason for the device to drop off the bus.

Thanks for clarification. I waited for it to happen again, here’s what happens in the log before the device magically disappears:

Honestly, I don’t see anything relevant before the first line. Except maybe that “pre-release fwcmd” came before “Link down” this time.

As written above, I currently have the kernel-firmware-* packages installed from the Update repository. I will downgrade them to the main repository and see if that makes any difference.

That sounds like firmware issue. Could be that there are dependencies between driver versions and firmware versions. Does this card have downloadable firmware?

Did you use the same driver version before? Is the firmware version the same in Leap 15.4 and Leap 15.5?

There were also Firmware changes in the sources by Larry Finger, later I will build the driver with older source so that you can test.

Also the firmware was updated last week.
Maybe the older firmware is working?

With kernel 5.14.21-150500.53 and kernel-firmware packages from the main repository, wifi fails as well.

On openSUSE Leap 15.4, I used the following driver / firmware:
rtw89 from home:sauerland:hardware (Leap 15.4 repo)
kernel-firmware-default from home:sauerland:hardware (Leap 15.4 repo)
kernel-default from the Update Repository

Unfortunately I didn’t note the running version numbers before the upgrade to Leap 15.5 because wifi was working good at the time.

I just did a system update today (the first update since my last post), the problem that wlan fails with the above-mentioned journal entries persists with the newer kernel and firmware.

Kernel:

What are my options now? File a bug report? If yes, whom do I file it to? Sauerland, openSUSE or maybe to Larry Finger?

For the sake of completeness, the problem has gotten a bit bigger: Before the update (with the setups mentioned in the above posts), I could get wlan working again by putting the system in suspend and waking it up again. Now, after the update, all kinds of interesting things happen if I try that:

  • after the wake-up, wlan still doesn’t work, additionally bluetooth is turned off and I cannot turn it on again.
  • If I then shut down or restart, the system hangs with a blinking underscore in the top-left corner of the screen.

To be clear: Suspend and resume before a wlan crash works just fine. Also, shutdown just after a wlan crash works fine as well.

Lenovo Laptop?

Maybe:

Actually yes. Good pointer, that is exactly my problem. Unfortunately, the proposed solution doesn’t help. Here’s what I tried:

  • in my BIOS there is no option to disable PCI power saving
  • I created the conf file as described:
cat /usr/lib/modprobe.d/70-rtw89.conf
options rtw89_pci disable_clkreq=y disable_aspm_l1=y disable_aspm_l1ss=y
options rtw89pci disable_clkreq=y disable_aspm_l1=y disable_aspm_l1ss=y
  • Unloaded the driver:
sudo modprobe -rv rtw89_8852be
rmmod rtw89_8852be
rmmod rtw89_pci
rmmod rtw89_8852b
rmmod rtw89_core
rmmod mac80211
rmmod libarc4
  • Reloaded the driver:
sudo modprobe -v rtw89_8852be
insmod /lib/modules/5.14.21-150500.53-default/kernel/lib/crypto/libarc4.ko.zst
insmod /lib/modules/5.14.21-150500.53-default/kernel/net/mac80211/mac80211.ko.zst
insmod /lib/modules/5.14.21-150500.53-default/updates/rtw89/rtw89_core.ko.xz
insmod /lib/modules/5.14.21-150500.53-default/updates/rtw89/rtw89_pci.ko.xz disable_clkreq=y disable_aspm_l1=y disable_aspm_l1ss=y
insmod /lib/modules/5.14.21-150500.53-default/updates/rtw89/rtw89_8852b.ko.xz
insmod /lib/modules/5.14.21-150500.53-default/updates/rtw89/rtw89_8852be.ko.xz

I found another github issue on this topic:
https://github.com/lwfinger/rtw89/issues/263
Here it is suggested to remove the file /lib/firmware/rtw89/rtw8852b_fw-1.bin.xz to make the driver load the older rtw8852b_fw.bin.xz firmware.
I did

sudo mv /lib/firmware/rtw89/rtw8852b_fw-1.bin.xz .

and rebooted. Unfortunately, the driver still seems to load the removed firmware out of nowhere:

sudo dmesg | grep rtw
[sudo] password for root:
[ 2.272426] rtw89_8852be 0000:03:00.0: loaded firmware rtw89/rtw8852b_fw-1.bin
[    2.272477] rtw89_8852be 0000:03:00.0: enabling device (0000 -> 0003)
[ 2.273869] rtw89_8852be 0000:03:00.0: Firmware version 0.29.29.1 (799134c3), cmd version 0, type 5
[ 2.273871] rtw89_8852be 0000:03:00.0: Firmware version 0.29.29.1 (799134c3), cmd version 0, type 3
[ 2.563926] rtw89_8852be 0000:03:00.0: chip rfe_type is 1

How can this be? I’d like to try to load the older rtw8852b_fw.bin.xz firmware.

It could be loaded in initrd. Hard to tell with only a few lines of logs. Or it could be built into the driver.

How can I get the driver to load the older rtw8852b_fw.bin.xz firmware?

Check what is included in initrd

lsinitrd /boot/initrd-$(uname -r) | grep rtw
sudo lsinitrd /boot/initrd-$(uname -r) | grep rtw
