RT61 Wireless in SUSE 11.0

OH MY GOD THE FRUSTRATION. Spent yet another night trying to get this EDIMAX pcmcia card working. Upgraded from 10.3 to 11.0 hoping for a better wireless solution.

Followed the SUSE HOW-TO for installing the latest Ralink/RT61 drivers from serial monkey. Didn’t get far before I got the following error:

no rule to make target `modules’

I have installed the source, headers, gcc, make. This really shouldn’t be this difficult. I am a database developer, but I don’t use Linux much and I rarely deviate from the standard unix commands. Is there someone out there that really knows their way around suse wireless config.

Thanks in advance,

Kraig

That’s all not needed! RT61 cards work out of the box with openSUSE 11.0 - you just need to download the firmware from ralink’s website http://www.ralinktech.com.tw/data/RT61_Firmware_V1.2.zip and copy the firmware (bin-files) to /lib/firmware, reboot… that’s it!

That is exactly the information I needed! I kept trying to run ./rt2561.bin and getting an error. Ooops.

Glad it helped you! Have a lot of fun with openSUSE!

I just want to say - thanks rhorstkoetter!
Your simple explanation helped me to solve my problem with PCI card D-Link DWL-G510 rev.C, in SUSE 11.0.

Hi guys, i’ve copied the firmware into the directory but YaST isn’t picking up my RT61 card, only two ethernet cards I have installed. It does however pick up that its an RT61 card when I do the lspci command

Any ideas? its an RT61 Rev B card.

/usr/sbin/iwconfig also shows no wireless extensions for all . (lo , eth0 , eth1 )
