RPI3 - wireless power managment issue

Hi,

I have recently discovered OpenSUSE as it has a good support for RPI3. Everything works fine, except for the wifi power management. The connection is very slow, and the pings are inconsistent. The workaround I found was to use “iwconfig wlan0 power off”, after which everything goes back to normal.

My question is this: why do I need to use the workaround, if my “ifcfg-wlan0” already contains “WIRELESS_POWER=‘no’”? The configuration was created by YaST. Is this a bug, and I should fill a report, or is there something else that I need to do?

The system is fully up-to-date with “zypper patch”.

Thank you.

First, welcome to openSUSE Forums. That is a good question. It might depend on the STARTMODE configuration perhaps, since if the wireless hardware driver is already loaded, perhaps it starts up with power management enabled by default. Good to know that using the following works though…

iwconfig wlan0 power off

BTW, that could be automated via a custom systemd .service unit if desired.

Yes, you could file a bug report for this I guess.

Recommend you first try “zypper update” instead of “zypper patch”
“patch” only applies security updates, “update” installs not just security updates but also feature improvements and fixes.

Bumped into the same issue. I suspect nothing processes the key/value of WIRELESS_POWER from the ifcfg configuration, moreover this setting is totally absent from the ifcfg.template file there. There are of course workarounds, but it would be nice someone to implement this functionality.

Have similar issue: everything looks fine but I can’t set mode nor can I set ESSID.

Due to some problems power management had to be switched off / disabled. Right now I can’t find relevant posts here on the forum or on the RPF github site. Lucky Patcher 9Apps VidMate
