If you are the sole user, just reload openSUSE, but keep your /home area and do not format it. Your personnel files will be maintained. If you are not the only user, you need to check with the administrator of the system. Password and admin accounts don’t work if they are easy to break.

Recover the old password is difficult, but there are crackers. Lot of
hours of computer time, dictionaries… not much hope if the password is
good.
Create a new password is simple, see the wiki article you got.

I was able to reinstall fresh versions of openSUSE using Live CD as well as DVDs in the past and retain the /home folder
Would this be possible even if i encrypted the disks ?

As long as you know the encryption password, you should be able.
