Help! When I installed openSuSE11, I apparently missed the opportunity to enter a System Admin (root) password. Anyway, my usual dumb defaults don’t work. I tried a number of suggestions I found (e.g., login as single user - it still wanted a root password; using the rescue system from the install disk). Nothing . Actually, using the rescue mode, I got as far as mounting the root partition, and executing the passwd command. After taking my proposed replacement password, it said “Cannot create salt for blowfish crypt”. -->SIGH!<–
Any ideas what can I do to insert a valid root password???
Go hack your /etc/shadow file and paste the following in where your
password is:
$1$IS5ig$WQh1IIH0bBG9GR3GyylQt0
Your password should then be ‘novell’.
Also note that the root password may be the same as the first user you
created, especially in OpenSUSE 11. Otherwise perhaps try running:
sudo /bin/bash
as your user to see if you can get a privileged shell.
Good luck.

Actually I found that I HAD specified a Admin password. It wasn’t being accepted because OpenSuse 11 is starting up with the Num Lk/Scr Lk on my keyboard set to Num Lk (hence some of the letters come out as numbers - but that’s ANOTHER problem to solve.):\
