root password has been changed

This happened to me yesterday, I thought I’d messed something up. It’s happened again this morning.

I installed Leap 42.1 as a Virtualbox VM. I entered YaST to update software. root password accepted. I entered Konsole to check software that way:

sudo zypper update
  • root password worked fine.

I made some updates to my system settings, theme, password etc., and now it won’t accept root password. I’ve checked it over and over, I’m definitely typing it correctly and it’s definitely the same as I did 10 minutes previously. I know the password, there’s muscle memory at work.

Firstly: how can I change my root password back? I can’t get into YaST to access the sudo pane.
Secondly: there’s something seriously broken with this OS if it automatically changes the root password.

Thanks

I’ve figured it out:

The default keyboard layout is Generic ***
I set my root password using this layout.
When I change the keyboard layout it changes the keys associated and therefore, when typing my root password, the association between what I’m typing and what the OS is seeing changes.

Solution: there should be an option to set the keyboard layout at installation stage, prior to setting user passwords.

Thanks

PS - why do I have to enter the stupid image verification EVER TIME!? It’s driving me mad.

Did you check this? Because IIRC, the keyboard layout is one of he first things asked for in the insttallation process.
