root partition suddenly mounts readonly

hi

I installed OpenSuse 11.1 on my laptop on an external HDD, but after installation just when auto configuration part runs, ‘/’ partition mounts read only. After that while I’m working with suse, sometimes it mounts read only too and I can’t write to it anymore.
Where’s the problem?:frowning:

Are you saying that ‘root’ cannot write to the / partition? Users normally only have read access to it other than in their own /home folder.

Are you by chance trying to run opensuse as root?
Otherwise this is normal as john pointed out

I mean the whole partion is read only, where users home folders is on too.
Users cant write to home folders and alos root can’t write the whole partition.
It’s not a permission problem, but a mount problem.

When that happens, do a “dmesg” to see if there are any system messages about errors with disk I/O. When a mounted partition suffers an unrecoverable error, it is often set to remount the partition RO to prevent further damage. You might also want to give your disk a consistency check using the Repair System.
