[Returning tumbleweed user] External screen not working with tumbleweed

Installed the latest version of tumbleweed today morning, it was having issues with the OOTB noveau drivers, so I installed nvidia drivers using the (SDB:NVIDIA drivers - openSUSE Wiki) guide.

Now the external monitor isn’t even detected, can anyone please help?

Hello and welcome to the openSUSE forums.

If I am correct that is done by the desktop software, but you failed to mention which desktop you use.

IME, the DM/greeter should light up all displays either uniquely, or as (a) mirror(s), depending on the DM and configuration. It’s been noted than NVidia’s proprietary drivers commonly don’t play nice with Wayland, so possibly all that’s needed is a switch from using Wayland to using X11 using the login screen’s session type selector.

Sometimes plugging another display into a running system will fail to light the added display, but a Ctrl-Alt-F6 switch out of X and an Alt-F7 to switch right back will light it up. Correct Fn keys for this process used to be reliable, but now with GDM and SDDM having abandoned tty7, switching back into X may require trying multiple Fn keys before the right one works.
