I am using SUSE -11.4 with regular updates. I have GIMP 2.6.11 at present working well. Can I also install the new version 2.8 without removing the present version? I would like to have both the versions for some time at least. How to install the new version without removing the old one?

i used to do that during the developing stages of the new GIMP, i.e.,
2.7.x. it’s easy if you compile GIMP yourself: you just specify a
different “prefix” during configuration, and all files will be installed
into that prefix.
GIMP always required newer versions of some libraries than were available
in openSUSE, e.g. BABL, GEGL, and GTK+. but recently requirement for GLIB
has been raised, too, so instead of compiling that from it’s source tree
as well, i started using the (RC1) version provided by marguerite su at
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/MargueriteSu:/gimp-2.7/openSUSE_12.1/
this installs GIMP into the standard system locations and will, i’m
afraid, not work with a similarly installed GIMP 2.6.x. for me and other’s
i’ve hear from, this RC1 version of GIMP works well, and i believe it’s a
fairly recent RC1, not much different from the final version.
