Resume Failure - Acer Aspire 5552

Sometimes it will resume just fine (from suspend or hibernate), others it fails after the initial log screen. 12.3 current/updated, … tried various combinations battery only, on charger, command suspend and hibernate, auto-suspend (on close). The issue is pretty random - some days it never resumes, the next day it will resume 10 times in a row before failure. Any suggestions on troubleshooting direction would be appreciated! Planning on updating to 13.1 next week, if that helps. Thanks! I’m sorry, but this is very difficult to read. You have to take care of
that line wrapping, and use code tags for the log messages.

Sorry, I was trying to get it formatted but it timed out and I could not save. Hopefully this will be a little clearer:

Sometimes it will resume just fine (from suspend or hibernate), others it fails after the initial log screen. 12.3 current/updated, Gnome; tried various combinations: battery only, on charger, command suspend and hibernate, auto-suspend (on close). Neither suspend method seems to alter the probability of failure.

When it fails to resume the initial text/log screen flashes, then the screen goes black; there is some sporadic disk activity, but the system never finishes resuming. The kernel never reach a stable state, as no consoles are available, nor are any network services.

The issue is pretty random - some days it never resumes, the next day it will resume 10 times in a row before failure.

Any suggestions on troubleshooting direction would be appreciated! Planning on updating to 13.1 next week, if that would help.

Notice that the message showing suspend has completed does not log until the system is trying to resume - is that normal? It does appear the same way for both successful and unsuccessful resume.

Be happy to provide dmesg , but it seemed pretty long for an initial post.

As this is a very incomplete advice, I will take the liberty to enhance it.

You get CODE tags by clicking on the # button in the tool bar of the post editor. Then you copy/ paste from your terminal emulator (konsole or other) directly in between those CODE tags.

Thanks.

You only forgot to use code tags (the ‘#’ button).
Posting in
Code Tags - A Guide

I’ll try to reformat it for you.

Are you attempting hibernate to disk or suspend to ram? The later is
more flaky.

I tried once to debug hibernation. I didn’t get anywhere useful (I did
dig out lots of info), but the next release solved the problem for me.

Notice that the message showing suspend has completed does not log
until the system is trying to resume - is that normal?

Absolutely. The filesystem is already closed for hibernation, it is
impossible to write anything. The only loging method available is a real
hardware serial port. I’m unsure if USB would work, there was talk about
that.

Or take photos with a camera…

It does appear
the same way for both successful and unsuccessful resume.
