Restore/rollback function

I wonder if a restore or rollback function is available in the new release 11.2. What I am looking for is a process which would allow to go back to a previous installation if an update or installation of an application does not work.
I case in point, after the one click installion of VLC things got screwed up royally and not fixable to put it mildly.

Such as process, if available, would make SuSe Linux just more enjoyable.

Thank you for replying.

If you go into YaST’s software installation, select “installed packages”
and then select a package that’s installed, you can select an older
version if an older version is available. The dependency checker will
sort out other things that need to be downgraded in order to have the old
package running for you.

That’s in 11.1 and has been available for a while - might get you to
where you want to be.

I don’t think there is a one on one equivalent of the windows system restore function, however I noticed in YaST via File > Export you can export a list of all currently installed packages.
Zypper can import/export all repositories.

That takes care of normally installed files. Any settings in the hidden folders inside the home folder can usually be deleted without a problem and will be recreated upon startup of the application, do confirm that before randomly deleting files though

Well, this certainly is an option - albeit time consuming. One of the other options would be to use Windows which in this case caters to old timers like me.

Thank you very much Jim. This appears easy enough, although it did not help me with that VLC package which I referred to. Well, I am going to install 11.2 soon and from there on don’t fix what is not broken. I just want to USE Linux and enjoy it.

Glad to help out, Heri - sorry that the older package wasn’t available in
this instance. It does depend on the maintainer of the repository
leaving the older versions available - some do, and some don’t.

Have a happy birthday next week!

it is not so time consuming to set up a bullet proof backup function
in Linux or openSUSE…and, after that it takes none of your time…

but, are you saying that Windows gives you a rollback function with no
setup or extra cost of any kind required?

that is news to me…

but, i wouldn’t know from experience as i jumped off that ship in 1995
while i was still young, in my late 40’s, and thinking straight…

i have heard that M$ users so often have problems that it would be
good for them to offer a free, no-setup-required, one button
way-back-machine…

sure would go a long way to obviate the need for all those reinstalls
and complete teardowns to sweep out the crud and malware, which i hear
my less fortunate friends talk about…

but, if what say is true i may go back to Redmond when i get in my
70’s, and when pigs can fly…
