response time VERY slow - OS 11 KDE 4.1

Hello everyone.

just moved to open SuSE 11 with kde 4.1 with no compiz or kde effects enabled.

my machine is: P4 1.6 1G memory Geforce 6200le

when i press the menu button or the quick shutdown button it takes 3-5 seconds to bring the menu up.

is this a normal response time? is there a way to speed it up?

thanks

Unlikely - have you checked the process list to see if you have something taking most of the CPU time?

when i press the menu button or the quick shutdown button it takes 3-5 seconds to bring the menu up

does this happen all the time, or just after 1st login?
It’s been like that with me at 1st login since 4.0.4 and still now in 4.1

otherwise, do you have graphics drivers installed

post terminal contents of
glxinfo

i can confirm this issue.

I have the same problem with openSuse 11.0 on my laptop:

Dell Vostro 1500
GeForce 8600M GT
Intel Core Duo T7250

After clicking on the start button, the menu takes about 2s to come up. Also I have problems with pull-down menus, they take more than a second to show, as well.

This issue is irrespective of whether composite features are turned on or not, plus I had the same problems with KDE 4.0.

I suspect this might be related to the NVIDIA driver problems (yes the binary driver is there and working), but even though things got WAY better on KDE 4.1, this makes me stick to KDE3 for now.

Any ideas? Which files are worth being looked at?

I had similar problems, although not that pronounced. I’m on a Vostro 1700 with an 8600M GT.

I have added the following to the “Device” section of my xorg.conf:

    Option "InitialPixmapPlacement" "2"
    Option "GlyphCache" "1"
    Option "BackingStore" "True"
    Option "DamageEvents" "True"
    Option "PixmapCacheSize" "2000000"

Based that on the KDE techbase info. Helped quite a bit. Not sure if they’re all necessary, but they haven’t seemed to hurt. The delay in the main menu (kickoff) is far less pronounced, no delays in drop down menus etc.

Hope this helps…

Cheers,
KV

Yep, there are known issues both with the recent nvidia Linux drivers (the nvidia forums have quite a few angry posts re this) and with the drivers vis-a-vis KDE 4 plasma & kwin.
