Resizing volumes using Expert Partitioner in openSUSE 12.2

Question: Re my installation of Suse 12.2, in retrospect I made the root partition / (sda6) at 5 GB a bit on the small side. I have used 4.3 GB already. I want to know the correct produre for enlarging it , preferably at the expense of my /home partition (sda7) which follows it. A 1.0GB swap partition (sda5) precedes the root partition, which also could be reduced to maybe half if need be. Using EP, I could first reduce /home, but I suspect the reduction would come from the far end of the drive, rather than at the junction with sda6? Unlike my installation under Suse10.0, EP on Suse12.2 does not show a nice before and after diagram or seem to allow the option of shifting in from either end like Partition Magic. What is the proper way to go about this? Carl

Backup before you do it

Use Parted Magic would be my pref
You can move it from the start end, but expect it to take some time
I use 20GB partition for /

Same here. Once /usr goes over 5GB, and the root partition creeps over the 10GB…

If you want my opinion and if you are ready to sacrifice your /home partition, I would just reinstall openSUSE if this were me. Just backup any important files and start over. I would suggest a root / partition of 20 GB, 2 or 4 GB for Swap and the rest to /home. Reducing or increasing the number or position of partitions will require an edit of several system files and will result in a system that may not boot. Consider doing a reinstall after a backup of anything you can not replace. Don’t forget your mail and mail setup in that backup, cause I have forgot that before myself.

Thank You,
