My current setup involves a RAID 5 array run from an Adaptec 5805Z card. I just added two more disks to the controller and used the RAID cards manager program to expand the array. I then had problems because when I attempted to grow the partition to match, yast wouldn’t let me, with no explanation. I booted up from a PartedMagic live USB and attempted the same process. Low and behold it wouldn’t let me do it because when I created the partition the array was smaller so the backup partition table is not at the end of the array. DOH. My question is, how do I move the backup partition table to the end of the array so that I can grow the partition, then delete the old backup? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Oh, I’m running openSUSE 11.4 but as mentioned earlier I’m booted to PartedMagic Live.
Ok… I think I might have just screwed myself. I ran:
sgdisk -e /dev/sdb1
because after reading the sgdisk man pages it seemed like a good idea. Now PartedMagic isn’t recognizing the filesystem. What should I do?
Ok, I think I know what my mistake was. I ran
sgdisk -e /dev/sdb1
when I should have ran
sgdisk -e /dev/sdb
I think I moved the GPT to the end of the partition, not the disk. Is there any way I can fix this or did I just screw myself over good?

Sorry, I don’t know any answers, but I thought I’d bump the thread since
you haven’t had any response over the weekend.
You could give some better information, like full details of the disk,
partition(s) and filesystem(s) you think you’re using. And the actual
output that you get from the various management commands.
I hope you have a backup
This looks like a good example of the benefits of LVM, but then I’m
prejudiced.

i have not only no answers, i have no questions–a fairly rare condition
for me…and i think not a good omen for the situation…
i also hope for a good backup . . .
(and mention in passing: RAID is just too ‘expensive’ for me–in ways to
loose data vs the speed benefit…of course, mine is just a home
machine, and RAID only makes sense, to me, for busy servers and other
industrial/enterprise settings [which can afford multiple off site and
geographically diverse backupS])

I’m not sure I’d like to manage 6 x 2 TB drives without RAID, which is
what the OP says he has.

yes, but his is not representative of my home machine…which is why i
wrote “me”…twice…
