I’m wondering how to reset the gnome desktop.
i.e. the task bar and everything is molested, etc. etc.
I’ve seen some posts with a shell command for this, however would you think
its resettable to default via the gui in gnome?

Hi,
What do you mean by reset ? What is going on with the desktop exactly ? You have a picture to provide ?
I can say that the task bar panel was removed and prior to that, the buttons inside of it were re arranged in a bad way.
As for reset I mean, shimbam! Everythings’ back to default.
To reset everything to default, remove those folders with this command :
rm -rf .gnome .gnome2 .gconf .gconfd .metacity
