Reply limit...?

Seriously ? Apparently I can no longer take part in the tumbleweed nvidia black screen topic. Black screen on Nvidia after updating to 20260428 - #224 by NoVeXX
Nor can I even edit my earlier posts which no one would see anyway.
How do I get around this limit?

This is normal. You only can edit your posts for 10 minutes. This applies for all users. See forum FAQ.

And when you have a technical problem with the forums, you better post in the Forums Feedback section.

  1. Well, I’m not an openSUSE Admin, so can’t provide the ā€œrealā€ reason.
I have noticed a thread that is now over 400 Replys, so I can’t imagine there is a ā€œlimitā€ (unless you’re posting insulting Replies), as I’m sure in that thread, there are many Replys from numerous folks.
  2. The ā€œeditingā€ earlier posts is a known feature. When you post your Reply, you ONLY have about five or so minutes to go back and edit it … after that short timeframe, you can’t edit it.
That is configurable, and openSUSE has decided to NOT allow folks to edit beyond those few minutes.

I did not see the forum feedback subsection sorry… maybe someone can move it.

When I try to reply I get this:

You have reached the reply limit for this topic

We’re sorry, but new users are temporarily limited to 3 replies in the same topic.

Instead of adding another reply, please consider editing your previous replies, or visiting other topics.

in the preview window.

Ah, yes … many forums (I participate in many different types of forums) do limit how many Replies ā€œnewā€ users are allowed to Reply. Some forums have a few restrictions, such as ā€œdon’t allow attachmentsā€, and so on.

So yea, this is mostly hoping to avoid ā€œAIā€ replies and folks who just want to ā€œspamā€ or ā€œtrollā€ a forum. The idea is to see how positive (and human) your Replies are … once you show ā€œreliabilityā€, those limits go away.

I get that but I’d really like to continue participating in the nvidia issue. It’s a little frustrating…
But thanks for taking the time. This may be my last reply here too…

And there was nothing in the FAQ about ā€œreply limitā€ that I could find.
There… that’s three replies I guess I’m done here

It’s defined by the forum software, Discourse. It is configurable to some extent by the admins.

Topics I start must count differently as I can still reply here … but not in the other topic.

CONFIG_ARCH_HAS_PREEMPT_LAZY is selected automatically with CONFIG_X86. It does not need to be explicitly called out in the config. If this is the issue then we will need new driver code to disable preemption in whatever critical section(s) is/are getting interrupted to cause these errors. Could be a bit of work there.

It is specific to the thread, after you’ve read some other posts to get from the ā€œnew userā€ trust level to the ā€œbasic userā€ trust level, then you’re able to reply more often.

The thresholds are in place as an anti-spam measure, and generally don’t cause an issue.

https://blog.discourse.org/2018/06/understanding-discourse-trust-levels/ provides an overview of how the platform’s trust levels work.

The promotion from ā€œnew userā€ to ā€œbasic userā€ is automatic. as others noted, we limit the ability to edit previous posts to 10 minutes (this has been discussed at length many times over the years, and we’re not going to change it.)

Once you hit that automated threshold, then you should be able to reply further in the nVidia megathread that’s currently going on. We haven’t changed any of the thresholds that are documented in the above linked Discourse blog post; the only difference is our editing threshold is 10 minutes, as noted above.

You can DM me or send an email to address on my profile in that case.

I can’t dm while at trust level 0 either. I tried that to reply to you

Hm… Discourse is not showing email on my profile for whatever reason. I’m gonna see if I can change that. At least bugzilla should show my email for authenticated users.

Doesn’t seem like there’s option for that. At least I can’t find it anywhere.

Discourse doesn’t have an option, to my knowledge, to share e-mail addresses as part of the profile. That could lead to potential abuses as well.

But @meaglyn , it looks like you are now ā€˜basic user’ (you can see this in your user profile; you may need to click the ā€˜expand’ button to see it), so you should be able to reply back in the other discussion.

Awh. It’s something I wanted to opt in for authenticated users. So people have a way to contact me at bugzilla, OBS and discourse. I have used that email at https://lists.opensuse.org, so it’s basically public anyway.

Receiving a DM will also generate an e-mail. But I can talk with the other admins and see if (a) we want to provide an option to show it, and (b) if Discourse even supports doing that (I’m not entirely sure it does - a quick search shows that it’s not included in native functionality).

My gut says that it probably doesn’t make sense - having e-mails viewable publicly to any user (even authenticated users) means that trust level 0 users (new users) would be able to do that, so there’d be a situation where spammers register an account, and even if the account is on hold pending review, they can browse the site and scrape for e-mail addresses.

That’s not something that would be in the community’s interest.

What if I have packaged and maintaining something at OBS? I want anyone to be able to notify me about any issues related to packages I maintain. Email is the easiest way for me to have that. I’m willing to deal with spam if it comes to that.

@Lioli7k The changelog, or if logged into OBS your email is there…
