Repeat question: 11.3 ISO only 49.0Mb?

Asked this on Jul 21, and didn’t get any satisfactory answers.
Thought i’d ask again before i switch to Ubuntu or go back to Fedora:

Has anyone gone to software.opensuse.org: Download openSUSE 11.3 and actually chosen “Installation Medium” as “4.7G DVD”, “Direct Link”, “32 bit PC”, hit the “Download DVD” button and gotten the file “openSUSE-11.3-DVD-i586.iso” which is not 49.0MB?

I mean, the steps above are not rocket science, and not much chance of making mistakes, so i’m not sure how i can get a download popup which specifies that the file is 49.0MB file, if it’s not actually that size?

Thanks,
Nilesh

Shows ok here. Maybe a bad mirror???

I always use bittorrent.

Thanks - like i said, i’m using the basic “direct link”. i’ll try the BitTorrent (i understand i need to download some other stuff to be able to do that).
But in the meanwhile, has anyone gotten a > 49.0MB file using the “Direct Link”? And i have tried various different mirrors, and they all have the same file.

Thanks again,
Nilesh

Well I tried it here and it shows a 4Gig file down loading. Note I did not download the file completely just let it start.

What are you using to download. It has been reported Windows IE does not handle 4gig files correctly. You might want to try specifying a mirror. You may want to report this but specify your geo-location so the bad mirror can be identified.

Download it for example from

ftp://ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/opensuse/distribution/11.3/iso/

It is fast and reliable.

Viljo

It works for me too - I tried now… Might be that the mirror you’re given is faulty… Could you post the complete URL of the download you get while downloading ?

Ditto here.

Just for the record, I assume this is the previous thread:

http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-help-here/install-boot-login/442632-opensuse-v11-3-iso-image-50mb-only.html

Good luck.

This is what my system says about my downloaded 11.3 ISO:

-r-------- 1 henk wij 4346398720 jul 15 21:33 openSUSE-11.3-DVD-i586.iso

And the checksum is OK

You fail to tell which download software you use. I used Konqueror to go to the website and choose the bittorrent option. Konqureor let Kget do the bittorrent download. No extra software needed.

Thanks a bunch to everyone who replied:
first the good news: i went gogalthorp’s original way, downloaded BitTorrent and completely my first download successfully.
then some other answers:
this is the only mirror out of the ones i tried that gives me something larger than 49.0MB (i discontinued it at 1.1G, since the bit torrent finished) - it doesn’t specify the size of the file though:
http://www.gtlib.gatech.edu/pub/opensuse/distribution/11.3/iso/openSUSE-11.3-DVD-i586.iso

all of the following mirrors are giving me a 49.0MB file:
http://mirror.umoss.org/opensuse/distribution/11.3/iso/openSUSE-11.3-DVD-i586.iso
http://ftp.utexas.edu/opensuse/distribution/11.3/iso/openSUSE-11.3-DVD-i586.iso
http://mirrors.xmission.com/opensuse/distribution/11.3/iso/openSUSE-11.3-DVD-i586.iso
http://mirrors1.kernel.org/opensuse/distribution/11.3/iso/openSUSE-11.3-DVD-i586.iso
and several others i’m too lazy to copy and paste here.
I tried all these in FF3.6, since IE has an issue.

if any of you could take the time to try one of these above links, and tell me if you get the right file, at least i’ll be able to determine if this is really some issue with my browser/laptop/etc, or if the mirror is actually serving the wrong file.

Again all your help is much appreciated.
Best,
Nilesh

I’ve just finished testing all four links. All of them report 4+ GB and I
stopped downloading each of them at or above 100 MB (the third one was
REALLY fast… as in, 3 MB/s reliably for the three hundred MB when I
stopped it). Something about your machine/connection/client is probably
still the problem. Glad the torrent option worked for you.

Good luck.

I tested with Linux FF 3.6.8 first and last tinyurl. Downloaded
both over 500 MB and informed sizes was 4 GB.

You have a problem on your side.

Are you on a corporate network? Perhaps there is a proxy, and it cuts short the download. I have
seen it hapening, a site with a corporate antivirus anti-proper download. Or you are a using windows
with some kind of overzealous local protection software.

Not unless you provide the long links, sorry.

AS the first poster said, this is not rocket science. I’m using firefox and chrome. I’ve tried several mirrors. I’m using the “direct” link to download the 32 bit DVD by http. Each time, it says it is downloading a 4 gig file but happily reports that it is finished at 49 megs. Go Figure. I took someones advice and ftp’d to a mirror and a download is running now and I believe well past 49 megs. What’s up with the http transfer function?

Are you sure you did not chose the Net-install version? I believe it is about 50 meg.

Yes, I’m sure. I’m looking at teh file it opened to save in my DL directory and it’s named openSUSE-11.3-DVD-i586.iso.

Cheers
mtcstle

Have you attempted downloading (via http) a large file from another site ? The original posting mentioned Ubuntu and/or Fedora, so any attempt at download from those sites would most certainly be greater than 49MB. You might also attempt downloading some other .iso from the openSUSE download site.

As for the mirrors, I had some recent problems with ftp.texas.edu. Not a size of transmission, just terribly slow, estimating 3 hours on a 15mbps connection.

Is the filesystem you are saving to a FAT filesystem?
