Repair Tool

I have a problem, which I am sure is with GRUB.The repair “fixes” faulty boot and partitions, but after accepting, an error message comes up with “Installation Error”.
I have tried reinstalling, but some files remain with the original modification date. Find files “GRUB” returns:

file:///usr/share/doc/packages/pm-utils/examples/hooks/01grub, size 652, modified 03/12/2008
file:///usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/99Zgrub, size 6214, modified 03/12/2008
file:///boot/grub, size 4096, modified 20/02/2009
file:///usr/lib/grub, size 4096, modified 10/12/2008
file:///usr/sbin/grub size 119512 modified 03/12/2008
file:///usr/share/doc/packages/grub, size 4096, modified 10/12/2008
file:///usr/share/YaST2/include/bootloader/grub size 4096, modified 20/02/2009
file:///usr/lib/grub/nbgrub, size 183746, modified 03/12/2008
file:///usr/lib/grub/pxegrub, size 184500, mofified 03/12/2008

The system is supposedly up to date from recent downloads. I am at a loss to explain how some files remain unchanged after reloading.:open_mouth:

Hello there,

Not sure if this is the case here but there was not so long ago a patch that said to fix this kind of issue (grub messed after using yast to edit it).

I think a similar issue happened to me at work (fresh install 11.1 dual-boot with XP) - grub was messed if I would use yast to edit the settings (I wanted to change the menu list).

Every time I wanted to change the settings it detected it failed to write/install itself.

What I did was to choose to just check for the grub issues and let it go with the settings it detected and choose its own menu display.

I did not check if that patch really fixed the problem.

Cheers.

Thanks for the idea. Do you perhaps recall the patch? I have shredded the files down to zero, according to shred, but they reappear. I am getting desperate!

Heya,

I just looked on my office computer:

yast2-bootloader - bootloader: fix for a bug when bootloader was changed

  • #461613: “Unable to boot after making changes to boot loader.” The basic problem is calling parted despite of any changes are created. The parted breaks the first 512B of extended and if there is installed GRUB stage1 the system is unbootable. The fix is in yast2-bootloader 2.17.50
    References:
    461613 (bugzilla) : bug number 461613

Installed version: 2.17.50-1.1.1

Good luck.
PS
Please notice that on the DVD the “repair tool” is still affected by the bug (at least it makes sense that it still is) so I’d suggest you try what it did work for me and than patch your system and edit your grub again.

I have seen this happen in the repair tool since I’m struggling with it now myself. it seems like if you just select the same settings again (when using the a rpair tool from the DVD) and choose ok, it will not give you that error a second time and then it will work properly.
You just have to go through it twice, otherwise it has given me the error yet has worked for me everytime. Except the fact that it is not detecting my Windows Vista installation and wiped the MBR (which is most probably myown fault?).

Not my luck! As you can’t delete, I resorted to shredding to 0, which I thought might work. Zilch! I’ve done it about five times.

YaST2 log is 144753 characters. How do I submit?

Thanks for all the suggestions and help, but I am getting nowhere. I think that my best bet is to reinstall 10.3 (don’t have 11.0), get a clean drive and update from there. :shame:

I think the best thing for me to do is to reinstall 10.3 (don’t have 11.0) and update to 11.1. It would seem the only way to get rid of whatever was corrupted. I have DVD that is a bit behind; can I safely download? Thanks for all the suggestions and help. John.:shame:
