I upgraded my daughters computer from 12.2 to 12.3 KDE 4.10, upon doing so I noticed a rendering issue and don’t know how else to describe it or where to begin troubleshooting it. I already deleted .kde4, the problem persists.

May be video related. What kind of video system does this PC have? I was unable to get openGL compositing to work with the default 3.7 kernel in openSUSE 12.3 new install and had to upgrade to kernel 3.8 (now you can get 3.9). I am running kernel 3.9 from HEAD. This issue has been present with the default kernel and 3.9.
I tried nvidia drivers but X doesnt load at all then (this computer is like 8 years old. (Inspiron 530N)). 128MB nVidia GeForce 8300 GS Turbocache, so I use the open source driver Nouveau.
Well, I do think those glitches are caused by the noveau driver. So you should get the nvidia driver to work.
Which driver did you try to install and how?
For your graphics card either the G02 or the G03 driver should do. And normally the installation just works…

The computer where I am seeing this is an Inspiron 530, and is 3-4 years old (with Intel graphics).
I am doubting that “8 years old” that you give.
For me, the problem began when I installed 12.3 - I think it was 12.3-RC2 but it might have been RC1.

Besides that, I had this computer when I lived in Tucson. We moved from Tucson up here 5-6 years ago.
I have been reading your blogs. Some interesting stuff to try. One slight problem though, this isn’t just a font issue. If only it were. I can move the mouse and the screen goes plaid or something. Look closer at the address bar, maybe you’ll see what I mean.
It is probably the nature of what I do on the web, that I would mainly see it as a font problem. I’m guessing that the firefox xrender problems are not only for fonts.
In KDE, are you using OpenGL for your Compositing type in Advanced Desktop Effects?
