Removing packagekit : does it disturb zypper ?

Hi ;=)

when i turn on my box (opensuse 11.4) i have the apper applet and packagekit trying to update packages, often times it 's not working for dependencies are missing or stuff like that, but this is impeding zypper to work at the same time ( PackageKit is blocking zypper. This happens if you have an updater applet or other software management application using PackageKit running.). Packagekit is busy thus can’t be exited …

Is removing packagekit going to disturb zypper or not ?

Thanks

I keep PackageKit and PackageKit-branding-openSUSE, but do not install kpackagekit or kupdateapplet-packagekit. This does not interfere with scheduled zypper updates. My primary reason was to avoid users reporting the update notifications.

openSuSE-11.4
kernel-desktop-3.03
Kmail/Korg/Kontact/Kdepim4 &c. from KDE-4.6.5
KDE-4.7.0

I gather you’re having problems with kpackagekit. zypper is a frontend for libzypp, and removing PackageKit won’t break these, but disabling kpackagekit would be an easier and safer way to go.

hello
in fact i set the updates to never, therefore i hope not to be bothered anymore ;=)

Be sure to check for updates from time to time using zypper or Yast. It’s important to keep up on the patches.

thanks  i’m always using both , that should be ok

How is it possible to disable the **** thing then ?

I usually change the name of the executable file to something else because these processes usually can not be killed by a single kill command - is there a nicer way ?

Congrats on removing PackageKit; dont worry, no problems will occur if you do this but remember to use sudo zypper refresh and sudo zypper up or dup, to keep your system up to date.

Run this command in a terminal :

kpackagekit

Settings -> search for updates combo box (set it to never)

Best regards,
Greg

Rather zypper patch or up, never dup unless you know what you are doing.
