I’m really desperate about the following problem. I try since hours to get this to work, but there is no chance to get it done.
Following Situation:
On my OpenSuse-System i have installed a firefox which allways starts in full-screen mode. The problem is:
Fullscreen doesn’t work as expected because there is always a white stripe on bottom of the screen. After some time i realized the white stripe is this stupid gnome-panel. I tried to remove it but no chance, after a reboot it will be always there again.
Here are my steps:
removing the ‘panel_bottom_screen0’ entry in the%gconf.xml in ~/.gconf/apps/panel/general/
then i removed the panel_bottom_screen0 folder from ~/.gconf/apps/panel/toplevels/bottom_panel_screen0
The thing is that i cant directly work on this machine (not at home), so all removal steps has to be done via ssh no vnc connection.
Does someone of you know how to remove it forever?
Maybe try another desktop?? Gnome can be picky about what it believes should be shown. Generally there may be some odd file that you may hand edit to configure things but Gnome is not really that flexable to custom setups compared to KDE.
In KDE you can have the task bar disappear or remove it completely That is the only default element that may interfere full screen Windows.
thank you for your fast answer but it isn’t possible for me to make a change to KDE (this system is not mine, i just have to setup some tools and the owner said it needs to be gnome (i usually prefer KDE but he doesn’t care, I’m only allowed to remove those panels).

So you need to install firefox to install some tools and you have ssh
access. Just use ssh -X and run firefox locally in an X window…
Else, logout as the user, switch to icewm or twm, do you work, logout,
select gnome and log back in…

Ok, thank you guys for your answers. The thing is that there are more of that system and i have to make a shell script for the update routine, so theres another reason why its only possible via terminal.
