Remote Help / Sharing Desktop (KRFB or so)

Hello,

The target is to provide help with OpenSUSE to a new user.
I am trying to connect

 • from FROMPC with OpenSUSE 13.2 Harlequin/Tumbleweed behind a common router, over the internet
 • to a TOPC with OpenSUSE 42.1 (LEAP) behind a UPS router

I can connect from FROMPC easily to remote windows desktop via RDP, so there should be no issue on that side.

As for TOPC, I instructed to set the other person to do:

 • setup IP forwarding for local IP (got by ifconfig) and port from 5900 to 5900, protocol: Both
 • started KRFB
 • he used some internet “what is my IP address” web site to tell me he’s (router) IP address

Note, that KRFB I have on the two machines differs from screenshots found on the internet. It has less features, there’s no “email invitation”, etc. I presume, that by starting KRFB, an instance of vnc server is started and waits for incomming vnc requests.

I started KRDC on FROMPC side, picked “vnc” and entered “routerIP:5900”. But I get only blue screen, nothing else.

I have relatively little experience with networks, routers, firewalls and remote desktops, so I hope to get some help to diagnose and resolve the problem. Or to take completely different approach.

Regards,

Oak

Yes, confirmed: the KDE documentation <https://userbase.kde.org/Krfb> indicates that Krfb should have an initial screen with a possibility to invite someone to work remotely as a “guest”.
But, also on my 13.2 system, krfb-14.12.3-16.1.x86_64 doesn’t offer this at all, anywhere. It doesn’t offer any possibility to raise a “personal invitation”.
The rpm package doesn’t contain anything for /etc and therefore it seems there’s no way to set up any system policies to influence this behaviour.

Will continue the investigation in an hour or two – appointment . . .

Now I’m confused:

 • The 13.2 rpm packet krfb-14.12.3-16.1.x86_64 is installed on this system.
 • Krfb says that it’s version 4.14.6.
 • The openSUSE 13.2 update repository offers the 4.14.3 source code.

Never mind the confusion . . .
Inspection of the code reveals that, the UI “InviteWidget” class is not being called by any piece of code – all the other UI Widget classes are being called by code.

@oakld: Who’s going to write the Bug Report? You or me?

@oakld: In YaST > Network Services > Remote Administration (VNC) did you enable “Allow Remote Administration”?
