Hello! I want to add some remote control functionality to my linux computer. This will make my movie watching easier!
So do you know any remote control that is compatible
a) with latest linux distros (And with opensuse 11.2 as well) and
b) with windows (for my woman’s computer) and
c) could be easily ordered from amazon,play.com and other famous e-shops.
I would like to thank you in advance for your help
I bought this one from newegg Newegg.com - AVS Gear GP-IR01BK Windows Vista Infrared MCE Black Remote Control and it mostly worked. I think that any MCE remote should work just fine. I had a little trouble getting it to work correctly with LIRC, but it ended up just being a problem where one config file used quotes and another didn’t. They just had to match. If you run into the same issue, just ask me for the config files I ended up using.
I should point out that I ended up buying a Harmony universal remote and no longer use the MCE remote directly. But, it did come with the IR receiver to plug into the computer that I still use. That alone is worth the money.
Oh, and it should work just fine in Windows (since it is actually designed for it).
I don’t think so. My understanding is that they are all identical in setup with LIRC. Meaning the LIRC config files are identical for all MCE remotes (technically I think there is an MCE and MCE2).
What I was trying to say is that any “MCE” remote should be recognized in the same way by the computer. The IR codes that it sends to the IR receiver are the same no model which manufacturer made the remote, as long as it is an “MCE” remote, but they are not recognized as a keyboard/mouse. You would need additional configuration for that to work. I remember reading about programs that will set it up that way, but can’t remember the names of them. Eventghost maybe?
I haven’t set it up to work as a keyboard/mouse since all I use it for is in VLC or XBMC. I just use a wireless keyboard and mouse when not in those applications.
