Recurring issue: rpmlib(PayloadIsLzma)

As many of you know, there have been many forum threads about rpmlib(PayloadIsLzma). First the issue was that the LZMA compressed RPMs was introduced with some major release (OpenSuSe 11 maybe ), and more recently the issue seems to be that support for LZMA compression of RPMs has been abandoned (e.g. in Leap 15.0).

My issue at hand is that I am trying to install the most recent (but not all new) version of jpilot on one or two of my machines. On the machine with Leap 15.0 there is no support for LZMA compressed RPMs, so I went back to a machine that still has OpenSuSe 13.2, hoping for success there. But no, there is no support for LZMA compressed RPMs there either!

Of course I tried the approach to start fresh from the source package of jpilot, but then some of the dependencies were on LZMA compressed RPMs… This is where I paused and decided to post this issue.

So is it in any way possible to install support for rpmlib(PayloadIsLzma) on either of Leap 15.0 or 13.2 ?

Hi, welcome.

I think you’re barking up the wrong tree. First: going back to 13.2? A no go, it’s out of maintenance and support. Second: on Leap 15? Why? zypper works fine on Leap 15. Why change? FWIW rpmlib is not even in Tumbleweed. My educated guess is that it’s obsolete, dropped for being a dead project etc.
To be honest, I don’t know what you’re trying to achieve.

To be honest, I also do not understand what the OP is up to. First, “as many of you know”, I actually did not know because I did not run into that at any time.

In addition, using the Yast installer on one machine, using zypper in on another, I successfully installed JPilot in Leap 15.0 on a few machines, no errors or problems.

Thanks Fraser_Bell, I am happy but surprised over your success with JPilot. Was it 1.8.2 or some other version ?
I did try with both zypper and Yast but ran into the same issue; nothing provides “PayloadIsLzma”, needed by one or more dependencies (needed RPMs).
I will not give up yet though, there may be several trees worth barking up :sunglasses:

Just looked. Version is 1.8.2-1.1. Just installed it in the past week or two in 15.0 on a Toshiba Laptop, running like a charm. Note this is the version for 42.2, but it is working just fine on more than one Leap 15.1 Laptops I am running.

So when I finally found some time to try this again, I just ignored the said dependency of PayloadIsLzma (“break jpilot by ignoring…”) and then the installation worked out just fine. Also the jpilot itself seems to function just fine with my dear old Handspring Visor :slight_smile:
