Record Desktop activity

Hello I would like a program that records my desktop activity as a video file. Do you know any nice program to do that?
Moreover it would be nice afterward to insert this video the openoffice or microsoft’s powerpoint. Do you know what is the “best” video format that guarantees the biggest interoperability (the ability the video to play in different platforms).

I would like to thank you in advance for your help
Best Regards
Alex

xvidcap
or
recordmydesktop

both from packman
Multi-media and Restricted Format Installation Guide - openSUSE Forums

Thanks
Checking them right now

Thanks again! Using the gtk version of record my desktop
Do you know how can I compress my video to a version that probably Windows and Mac versions understand? Actually this is a video of static images chaning every 5 secs so perhaps a specific encoder might work pretty well.

Best Regards
Alex

If you mean it’s a slide show. Wouldn’t you be better making a office presentation

No it is not a slide show… it is a virtual environment that has slight changes from turn to turn. Every turn from the other differ 1 sec so 1 fps is ok

You can use avidemux to convert video, it has a UI so may be easier than say
ffmpeg
(There is a CLI program for this WinFF) but not tried it.
