recommending a ups backup

I just wanted to give a shout out to Eaton brand ups because it has a usb and software interface that works perfectly with openSUSE. Actually this is the first day so more testing is needed but the software one downloads is actually listed as SUSE compatible (rpm) and it installs and seems to work out of the box. I got the entry level Powerware 5110 which is supported by the software.

I would like to hear other users experience with ups products that are compatible with Linux or openSUSE. It was hard for me to shop for one of these units because of the lack of or outdated information on the web.

Ok, nice to know there are some other options. Do you have to enter some commands in the terminal to get that APC to work? This one has a web interface and worked out of the box without any terminal or instructions. I like it like that.

APC is who I use. I’ve got a Back-UPS Pro 1400 and a newer Back-UPS XS
1000. Both work great (the latter is much newer, replaced an 1100 that
completely croaked on me end of last year).

Yeah, I have an APC on my router, modem, tv that has been working for years now. It works great for those little 15 second outage during storms. I got the eaton for the office computer so I do not have to worry about that one losing data during a storm.

The APC systems are good for more than just a 15 second outage. My 1000
has about 45 minutes of battery time, and apcupsd can be used to shut the
system down if the outage goes too long.

Sorry, did not mean to say APC was only good for 15 sec outage as I had written in my last post. I realize it is a good company too and thank you for the input. I had made a grammar mistake and meant to say that my model of APC backup that I was using is only good for those 15 second outages.

Follow up with some details, I also purchased the model Eaton 3S to backup a smaller unit and so far it works good but I have yet to test the shutdown function. The wierd thing about this unit is that it has a bigger more modern battery than the 5110 but the shutdown function seems to only work with windows pc. I still have to test out the shutdown for linux but since it is not mentioned in the docs I am going to assume it will not work. I will report my progress in the future on this thread.
