recommended video cards for Leap 42.x

I would appreciate if I could get some recommendations fro video cards. I currently have a Nvidia GeForce 210 and I had issues each time I upgraded and now I have some problems with KDE and I assume it has to do with it. I’m using the nouveau drivers to be able to use my screen. However I want my multiple monitors functionality which I don’t have currently. I don’t play games but I connected a TV to my video card to watch movies, sport games, etc. So I think these requirements would be satisfied by most of the video cards on the market today, the point is to have one for which drivers are reliable than Nvidia and using opensuse. Thank you and appreciate your reply in determining my decision in purchasing another video card.

Well its unfortunate that you’re experiencing problems. But also know that there are a whole whack of threads of people with Nvidia and Intel devices having difficulty with Plasma. I noted recently that, in TW, I’m (at least, so far) no longer having problems on my Intel based system. The points being:

  • you already have a good card
  • driver problems affect other vendor card’s too
  • software marches on, so what may not have worked today, may work again tomorrow

You’re quite correct in your assessment that most adapters would satisfy your usage needs. I’ll refrain from making any suggestions, as I believe you already have/own a solution to your needs (i.e. the GeForce 210) … but if you really want to throw money at the problem, I’m sure others will give you advice on how to spend your money.

As you seem satisfied with the nouveau drivers, I’d think it points further to you not needing to change. I won’t address your multi-monitor issue here (will do so in your other thread).

My other suggestion is that, if operability with Plasma today is an issue, why not switch desktops ? … and then revisit Plasma in the future to see if stability between it and the nvidia driver has returned.

FWIW I have had great success with NVIDIA 630 card. I got one that has no fan just a honking big heat sink. You can find for 60-70 $ range. Has moderate performance but is sufficient for most things. Using GO4 driver. Works well in 13.2 and 42.2.

Thanks for replies(Tyler_K and gogalthorp). I’m trying different things w/o any success. I tried to remove everything related to plasma(at least what I recognized as being plasma) and after rebooting got in ICEWM desktop. I tried other to get back to plasma and at one point i got everything to normal except the multimonitor which was complaining that :

  1. missing library kdm_?(cannot recall name now)which was supposed to be under kplasma5. reinstalled kplasma5 and again lost my toolbar and access to a menu in kde.
  2. have some old orphaned packages - i would like to find which but not able so far

I would like to get any kde working version installed first( or whatever was the default in 13.2) but don’t know how can I achieve that. I most probably carried some garbage from the previous version(s) which is making this very difficult to cleanup. i need help on how to do it.
Meanwhile I will look for a video card - second hand will be fine - if I cannot get this working.

my last attempt fixed my issues and I was not able to edit the post in time which should be read like this:
Thanks for replies(Tyler_K and gogalthorp).
I do have a kde environment now after multiple tries to cleanup. Just my multimonitor function is not there. I opened a bug while receiving some errors https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=346519
this is a recognized bug, but I don’t understand how I can correct it. I will revisit plasma in the future once nvidia will have a stable driver for GeForce 210, or I find out which is the correct driver, is there any way to find out which cards are for which driver(G03,G04 or G05)?

Meanwhile I will look for a video card - second hand will be fine - if I cannot get this working.

I buzzed through that … it looks messy. But, from your other post, it sounds like you kind of have a stable platform at present, albeit, just not one that provides everything you want.

I’ll leave it to that other thread for the troubleshooting, and this one for others to provide you purchase reco’s
