I’m new to SUSE and got a new PC with 2 1000 GB hdd and 8 GB RAM.
The problem is how to partitionate these for optimal performance (no RAID) and what mountpoints are suggested?
My thought:
On hda is space left, but for what??? Or simple increase the VISTA-partiton? Install also Ubuntu (I’m using it now).
Or is it better to SWAP on the beginning of hdb for greater performance?
The primary job is to play/store videos, also surfing the net and typing eMails, some OpenOffice and a little gaming (Battle for Wesnoth).
No programming, no experiments but often trying games or new video players.
So now I’m interest in YOU suggestions!
But please no expert config or can I as an beginner play with LVM?
I’d forget the FAT32 partition - file size restrictions get in the way. Instead of FAT you can use NTFS for switching files between openSUSE and windows. NTFS is now very well supported.
If you’re not making an industrial strength server, I see no need for separate partitions for /boot, var, tmp, opt.
Swap 4Gb is OK, given the space you’ve got (envy). It won’t be used much given the RAM. Nice amount of ram (more envy).
I’d make the partitions on sdb as root, swap, extended [home + spare space]
On sda I’d put vista, NTFS data, whatever
You’ve got 1000Gb on sda2, so conventional size constraints aren’t valid. Bu I suppose neither is wasting space valid. What to advise?
One:
You only need 8 Gb for the root parttion and your choice for /home. But I never use as little as 8Gb. And I never iuse as much as 50 Gb either because it’s wasted and I prefer to use the space for other Linux distros and my work xp.
So there’s nothing wrong with 50 Gb for root, but 20 is heaps.
Two:
5 Gb for swap is OK when you have a 1000Gb drive. But any more is simply a waste IMO.
Three:
How much does vista need, you ask. For the operating system part, 15/20 Gb is good for operating system + applications. If you have heaps of storage requirements, use D for that.
Four:
You seem to intend to back up Linux data to an NTFS partition. That will remove the Linux ownerships and permissions from the data. That’s actually OK (if it doesn’t bother you) for documents and media because when a user copies those things back to a Linux partition they will auto achieve appropriate permissions and ownership. But it’s not OK for plenty of other files in the /home territory to go to NTFS as a backup and then to come back to Linux.
One: Ok, 20 Gb then!
Three: Also my opinion, games have nothing to do on C:
Four: Thanks for that advice, I would have forgot it! So only videos and music for all users
Thanks a lot for your advice.
My only problem is now that a have to wait for the new PC, Mainboards (Gigabyte, Asus and MSI) are out of stock
I didn’t want to, but it seems I have to…
All of the 790GX-Boards seem to be out of stock - even though they’re marked ‘shippable within 24 h’… (ein Leid!) >:(
