Hi everyone, I had a Brother MFC-J4340DW printer/scanner which worked great on Tumbleweed. Unfortunately, I bought some ink from Amazon and the printer is now kaput. I put the new cartridges in and the printer kept complaining about not being able to detect the magenta cartridge. I removed the new magenta cartridge and put the old one back in to see if it was just a faulty cartridge but the printer still keeps complaining and I can now no longer do anything with it.
Can anyone please recommend a good printer similar/better to my existing broken one, preferably one that will accept 3rd party cartridges without bricking?
You could try HP as they seem quite well supported on Linux & I have a Deskjet 4130e Printer Scanner working OK with tumbleweed here. Not sure about dodgy 3rd party cartridges as I use one of their instant ink subscriptions. That works out pretty economical for my limited printing requirements but I guess it depends on how much you print? HP Printers
I use an HP Deskjet 2600 series that I bought back in year 2019. (more precisely an HP Deskjet Ink Advantage 2675)
It works nicely with GNU/Linux - which is the main reason I bought it. HP give good GNU/Linux support.
Another reason I bought it (in addition to it not being too expensive) is its HP cartridges are not as expensive as many of the other HP models
However, it does checks for every new cartridge inserted to see if genuine, so I do not believe it is a printer that will accept 3rd party cartridges without causing an issue.
As far as printers go I can recommend the Brother hl-1110.
Works great on linux afaik and I use 3rd party cartridges.
Only monochrome though (black&white) and no scanner.
I would definitely go for Brother. Yes, HP is supported through hplip, but my 2600 series printer ( in a cupboard since 2 months after buying it ) does not accept 3rd party cartridges. It simply refuses to print and complains about “No HP cartridge found”.
I doubt the printer is really kaput, there is no reason that the ink will kill the printer, it is just Brother trying to force you to buy their ink.
Have you tried to factory reset the printer, it is explained at the Brother webpage.
You can also try a toner reset (plenty of guides in the web), this will be probably the better option.
From our many years experience, we would never use an “ink” printer. Too much hassle, with ink going bad if not used regularly, etc, etc.
We have an HP Laserjet Pro. It does: printing (including 2-sided printing), copying, scanning, and faxing. It has a paper tray that holds 200+ sheets paper.
We can connect to it using Ethernet, Wifi and Wifi-Direct, Bluetooth, or via USB cable. We can also print from our Android (Samsung) smartphones. It’s an HP, so has a long-standing reputation
Hi, Do this at your own risk. You can try this method just for checking if the magenta is bad. Take out the magenta cartridge and put a black tape on the slot where the sensor is checking if your cartridge has ink or none then reinsert the cartridge and do a test print. I’ve done this on my brother MFC model and it helped me.
Hi,
See the image below for location where to tape.
The green color is an electrical tape covering the sensor area. In this example I just put the tape for reference the tape should cover that whole spot.
Just a warning this is at your own risk and not advisable to use this to fake the printer for daily usage.
