Diablo I/II/Lord of Destruction

Where would I be without this?

I am really digging Battle for Wesnoth. I’m suprised its not more popular. I am a sucker for strategy games.

Warcraft III for me. It’s still one of the best war strategy games around today, even though it’s about 7 years old. It’s not Linux-compatible, though … and Battle for Wesnoth just doesn’t beat it. Warcraft graphics are still superb.

I’m still wondering why the Warcraft 3 creators had to give Arthas such a bad end in the Human race campaign… Killing him off would have been better than turning him into an evil death knight. :stuck_out_tongue:

I am surprised that no one has mentioned BZFlag. It is truly cross platform. The game play can be good for a short spell of violent relief although I have seen people spend much longer. It seems simple at first but some of those long time players are sooo devious.

My personal favourite.

openTTD (opensource version of “Transport Tycoon Deluxe”) > 10 years old but stilll horribly addictive, now it is OSS, people are adding new bits like different trains, coaches, depots etc, people have added some 32-bit stuff for really nice detail. Someone has made a patch for extra zoom so you can see the details better…

I am not really a gamer, but World of Goo has given me (and my beloved niece) hours and hours of fun, truely a game designed with lots of affection - it’s the only software I ever buyed so far. Beside that I ocasionally play Nexuiz (Minsta-DM with hook), it’s a nice way of getting rid of agressions plus it has a pretty cool community (which most egoshooters defenitely do not).

While these two games have been mentioned before, nobody has given a hint on a package called ‘gamestore’, which can be fetched via the ‘games’-repository. Gamestore provides a nice interface for browsing through the games-repo, showing screenshots, descriptions and giving the option to install those games - it’s a bit like Steam (I guess), only for open source games.

I recently stumbled over a pretty bizarre game called → Toribash, which is some kind of ragdoll-fighting game in which you set each move in single turns - it’s hard to describe, just check some of the amazing replays featured on the Toribash-site and YouTube. “Violence perfected” sums it up pretty good I guess. It’s not open source, only freeware, but there is a Linux-version which runs without a flaw on my system.

I used to play ‘ET Wolfenstein’ a great deal, it is fun but I’m not fast (good) enough to become anything above average>:( Though, I enjoy it anyway. I’m a bit old and (thus?) still enjoy old games like ‘Heroes3’ and ‘Simcity 3000’. I keep an old SuSE 9.1 installation just to play those games. Further more, old as I am, I enjoy playing old c64 games (I use Vice), in particular: ‘Winter Games’, ‘World Games’, ‘Summer Games’ (I and II), ‘Rock Star’ and ‘Defender of the Crown’, great nostalgic fun!. I noticed the dosbox game link which I found rather interesting, I have used dosbox mainly to play old Championship Manager games: ‘CM93/94’, ‘CM2’ etc.

Other good (native) games:

  • Doom 3
  • Penumbra series
  • CSmash
  • Freeciv
  • TripleA
  • X2
  • Racer
  • Unreal Tournament II

Cheers,
Olav
