Reboot into Windows XP option

I seem to remember, openSUSE had an option, when dual-booting, to “Reboot into Windows XP” (or any other OS installed).

It was handy because it would reboot the system, and automatically boot into Windows for that session, but then next time you boot up afterwards it returns to your default (presumably openSUSE).

This may have been a KDE 3.5 feature that was lost in the conversion to 4.x.

Does anyone know if this is still available, how to set it up or is this a gone item that should be added to Open Fate (features request)?

I know this feature exists in KDE 4.4, however it didn’t seem to work for me. Then again I usually don’t know what I’m doing :p.

Hi,

The last time I used KDE it was still there.

Just select reboot from the menu, when the window with reboot appears,
click and hold reboot, then a drop down menu should appear with the same
options as you have in grub.

It’s not working in KDE 4.4.1
There is a bug report since 4.4.0, but doesnt seems to be fixed…

Yep, it did work in 4 but now it doesn’t.

glad I (a) do not dual boot and (b) do not use KDE.

It’s available on KDE via Leave>Restart Computer>list from grub.

Works on KDE 4.3.1(livecd) and 4.3.5 here.

Upgrade to 4.4.1 killed it.:frowning:

It’s also available via Menu at bottom-left of login screen i.e. Menu>Shutdown>Restart Computer>list from grub. Suggest a KDE 4.4 user tries it from there as well and report back here.

BTW, default Kubuntu 9.10 doesn’t have this feature, so possibly not a standard KDE feature. PCLOS 2009 does have the feature, but then again it also has the openSUSE K menu.

Tried it in KDE 4.4.1, latest revision from factory. The menu appears after holding the “restart” button, but when it reboots, it doesn’t automatically boot into the selected item; I tried selecting Windows 7, but on reboot, the grub menu comes up normally without selecting anything other than the default.

So it appears that it is currently broken.

Personally, I preferred the list when it was a sub-menu within Kickoff; it was more visible to the end user than it is now. But choosing an option from the restart dialog is easy enough to do, you just need to know it’s there first (which I didn’t know about until KDE 4.3.2). :\
