Reboot after instalation no keyboard

I have installed openSUSE 11.1 on my Acer aspire 1800 Laptop

All keyboard input including mouse pad has no effect.

USB mouse works.

Help!

Start Programs-System-Configuration-Sax2 and try to configure the keyboard there. If you don’t know what type you have, pick Generic 104
Save and exit, reboot and try again.

Question: does it work at boot, i.e. can you select an option, or can you remove one character from the vga= statement and the bottom and put it back? And, if that works, does hitting Esc during boot show you the boot messages?

You should try to get a little more specific. What desktop manager are you using? Did you try the live CD first? Have you tried a USB Keyboard?

Unable to start yast2 requires root permissions cannot input password

Keyboard functions at boot can select from menu, can remove and replace character from the vga= statement and hitting Esc during boot show the boot messages.

I have used both Gnome and KDE4 desktop managers the latter in current use.

Did not try live CD first

Will try to get USB keyboard do not have at present.

OK, so the keyboard only doesn’t work after the start of the X-server (shortly before the login-screen appears. That’s getting us a bit further.

On the option line in the bootmenu type “init 3” after the vga=… (without quotes and a space first) and boot. Mind, you’re not getting a login screen, but a text based console login. From what you’ve told us, your keyboard should work here. Log in using normal username and passw.
Then do next:
su -c sax2
Change the keyboard settings to Generic 104, check all other settings , save and exit. Now reboot and let us know if it’s working now.

Hi

I have managed to login after init 3 (command line said will start own server if necessary is this significant ) and change to generic 104 PC this was the nearest from list.

Tested it in Yast2 input present upper and lower case, numerical input and shift for “ £ $ etc.
Saved on exit.

After reboot no change, went to do process again at login prompt no input from keyboard.

have tried reinstall of 11.1 still no change.

Will get USB Keyboard from work see if that works it may let me login

cheers Rhyddian

Maybe the keyboard is dying. Can you post the output of:
dmesg | grep keyboard
And can you post the contents of /etc/X11/xorg.conf as it is now ?

hi
have had mixed results I have been able to get control of keyboard after boot by using terminal and su -c sax2 however it is not stable some times it is OK if you logout and log back in or restart from shut down menu. I have also retained it on shutdown and restart it then failed on second restart.
I have searched for the two files you asked for in the root, etc and boot folder no record found. New to linux are these folders the correct. Currently using USB Keyboard but have lost this and had to reinstall.
Rhyddian

Have located info requested, I have control of keyboard
after restart.
If I lose keyboard will will recopy and send current state
Xorg.conf

In the copy there’s a couple of lines containing your username. Are they in the xorg.conf file or did they get there during copy and paste. Please check.
If it’s working every once in a while it could very well be a dying keyboard. If the username in xorg.conf is realy in the file, re-issue the sax2 command. Keyboard layout normally is ‘us’ instead of ‘gb’ but I don’t know if that matters
