Realtek 8188CE, driver downloaded, hardware identified already, but don't know how to get it work

Hello guys, I am completely new to linux and completely confused how to do this and that in linux at the beginning. I slowly understand the linux environment. One big thing that until now i cant even solve it is get my Wireless on my Laptop to work. I already identified my hardware, it is Realtek 8188CE.

05:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Device [10ec:8176] (rev 01)

I am running on openSUSE 11.3 kernel 2.6.34.10-0.6-desktop. I search through the forum and the internet that i need to install the firmware for my wireless. I have found and downloaded the latest driver from realtek, here is the name of the file

linux_mac80211_0012.0207.2013.tar.bz2

and here is the folder name after i extract it

rtl_92ce_92se_92de_8723ae_88ee_linux_mac80211_0012.0207.2013

The thing is, i dont even know how to install the firmware! What should I do? Please can anyone help me? Tell me if you guys need more information for the hardware, and tell me how to do it. Many thanks.

.

lwfinger guided me through getting and installing firmware in the Toshiba Wireless ?? thread.

There may be some pointers there that will help with your problem…

The OP is trying to use the vendor driver. As no one actively supports this
driver, no one has ventured any instructions. BTW, that driver requires
considerable effort to get it to build and run on modern kernels. Unless you
have some experience in kernel coding, I suggest that the vendor driver is not
the way to go.

Sorry late to reply,

Many thanks guys for the information, i have read the whole thread TwoHoot informed,
And to lwfinger, yes it needs that considerable effort to get my wifi to work on OpenSUSE 11.3 and I dont have experience in kernel coding,

After I read your post, and i’m quite desperate in doing it,I started to think about upgrading my OpenSUSE 11.3 to OpenSUSE 12.1
I do an online upgrade through zypper and successfully upgrade to OpenSUSE 12.1
Then after that I try to make my wifi to work, and yes it finally works on OpenSUSE 12.1!

Yet I’m still curious, why on OpenSUSE 12.1 my Realtek 8188CE works and on OpenSuse 11.3 doesnt work?
Its just like plug and play in OpenSUSE 12.1!

Well at least now I can get a wireless connection
Many thanks for the advice from TwoHoot and lwfinger,

That driver was first added to kernel 2.6.38. Any kernels older than that do not
have the capability to use that hardware. As I recall, 11.3 had 2.6.27.

Okay, now I see why my realtek works now on openSuse 12.1Well thanks for the information lwfinger!Regards,gallard0inc
