I just downloaded the openSUSE-NET-x86_64-Build0008-Media.iso and started the installation. I was hoping that this release would finally support the Realtek 8187SE wireless adapter in my Toshiba Satellite L505D-S5965. Yast shows the device under hardware information, but it is never assigned a device name. Manually running the installation and trying either rtl8187 or rtl8180 modules only gets a ‘No network device found. Load a network module first.’ I know other distros has support for this wlan chipset. Will we have it too?

It is supported in kernel 2.6.32 in the staging drivers section. In addition, I
am working on converting it into a proper mainline driver. One or the other of
those drivers will be in openSUSE 11.3, or you can download a 2.6.32 kernel from
the Factory repo.

I just upgraded to 11.2 GM and discovered a 2.6.32-rc5 kernel in it. As a
result, your rtl8187se should work once you get the release installed.
Thanks for the update! I won’t have a chance to try this for about 36 hours - but I’ll report back as to how it goes. Thanks for the info and quick response…
OK-I finally had a chance to install 11.2. I’m posting from my Toshiba, but via eth0, not wlan0. ifconfig at least shows the wlan0 interface now, but I’m not able to connect to my AP. I tried creating a connection via NetworkManager, but I see no results. I noticed that the kernel that I have from the iso is NOT a 2.6.32.x, but rather 2.6.31.5-0.1. Could this be my problem? lsmod shows that rtl8187se is in fact loaded.
I’ll play around some more and see if I didn’t muck something up somewhere… :\
Oh - and if it matters, I installed the openSUSE-11.2-DVD-x86_64.iso.

Do you have an RTL8187SE PCI device or is it USB? The driver for the SE is
vendor written - those are of questionable quality; however, I know of one user
that has it working. The 2.6.31 driver is the same as found in 2.6.32.
The Realtek Wireless is an internal adapter mounted on the PCI bus. Would it make any matter that NetworkManager reports that it is using r8180?

That is the correct driver for it.
My pc with 11.1 won’t boot with it installed. Did you get it to boot? The pc is dual boot and it works in XP without a problem.
I’m happy to report that it was my stupidity, not 11.2 or the driver. Some how I had mucked up the AP’s settings. :shame: After I reset them, and set it up to use WAP2 Personal, it picked up the IP address off my DHCP server and away it went! In fact right now as I type, I sitting on my deck, watching the sunset and sipping on a nice, cold Tyskie
I’m sure that if I had the AP set up properly, it would have worked correctly from the start.
On 11.1, I was never able to get the wireless to work. In fact, I had to do an install directly from the DVD because it didn’t even have the driver for my NIC. I had to add that after install by USB stick to get networking to work - but again, on 11.1, it was only eth0 - no wlan0 at all.
Quite pleased with 11.2 - now I get to start playing with the other features now. I’ve only been waiting since Sept. to put this Toshiba through it’s paces
Again, it is a Toshiba Satellite L505D-S5965 :

Not surprising as the driver for the RTL8187SE was not added until
kernel 2.6.31.
I just upgraded my pc to 11.2 and made strides in getting this to work. With the card installed in 11.1, opensuse would not even boot. Now, it boots but won’t load the card.
Yast does not see wlan0 and suggests it is a firmware problem. lspci correctly identifies the card. I have a linux driver (from 2007) for this that will not compile, makedrv throws out errors for files it cannot find, but I can.
I usually put modules for ndiswrapper in via network devices in yast. But yast won’t let me do that in this case. Trying to run ndiswrapper from CLI throws off errors that it can’t find some *crypt files, but they are available. This is a mess. Is there any way out?
hmmm… maybe a new wireless card on cyber Monday…

Please run the command ‘/sbin/lspci -nnv | grep 8199’
If that returns anything, then follow the instructions below:
Forget about ndiswrapper and compiling your own driver nas the 11.2
kernel includes a version of the vendor driver that works.
Is the driver loaded? Does ‘lsmod | grep 87se’ return anything? If so,
the driver is loaded.
There is no external firmware. YaST is just making a general observation.
Whant does ‘sudo /usr/sbin/iwlist scan’ show?
The pc is not accessible to me tonight, but I will follow the directions tomorrow.
I tried something different. I booted with the 11.2 DVD and selected “Upgrade” instead of install. It went well and my settings etc. were saved for me. The history I had with trying to get wireless to work with that pc was awful. I tried, not only this pci card, but a Belkin and a Trendnet (Ar5523?)usb dongle. Ndiswrapper -l shows drivers for each, but the Realtek driver is showing an odd number. I gave up on these so long ago, I forget how I got them to work.
That said, I plugged in the Trendnet (atheros)usb and 11.2 picked it up and wicd connected it. Seeing all the drivers loaded, I assume that is a problem. I was afraid to remove any until I got something to work. For me, the pci card would be better than the usb. So, I’ll get working on it tomorrow.
An old problem is resurfacing. The pc hung on boot. I had to power it off. The second time, it booted but would not get an IP address from the router. I had both the pci card and usb dongle connected to the pc so I could get the info you requested.
Wicd wasn’t working right, so I decided to look at the settings in yast. Clicking on network settings, the pc froze when probing the card. I had to power off the pc. At that point, I pulled the card, rebooted with the (atheros - net5523) usb dongle attached, ran modprobe ndiswrapper, shut down wicd, ran ifup wlan0 and I’m connected again.
I would like to get the pci card to work, but it is too flaky. I’m going to shut down wicd and run with either traditional ifup or NM. If you want to advise me on the best setup for this, I would gladly take your advice.
